Rubbish Sun was far, far more than just Solaris / Sparc. At best, under Oracle the best they've done is kept their head above water. Sun had very impressive hardware (x86), MySQL and of course Fishworks which had developed things such as dtrace and zfs. Both are still incredibly impressive to this day. ZFS has been virtually stagnant since they sold, which shows you what Oracle did with it. Oracle post acquisition could't keep Jonathan Schwartz around for long, nor Bryan Cantrill and many other of the top engineers at Sun. They essentially gutted it and tried to make a quick return rather than continuing with the long term vision of Sun. Any engineer who knew what they were doing jumped ship as soon as possible. A shame they sold out, I have no doubt that they'd be in the top 5 software / hardware vendors with some decent leadership.
