Sorry, I haven't tried the spice mix, Mexican spices are not that complicated to blend yourself, compared to say Indian. Corriander, cumin, garlic chilli/paprika would probably cover most of the base spices.

You probably won't find smoked paprika at Woollies. Try a deli. Alternatively, make your own :) You could either dry roast some sweet paprika powder or char-grill some mild red chillies, peel them, dry the flesh then grind it up. Time consuming tho.

    It'll be smoked paprika :)

Try a spice store or asian grocer.

My favourite "spice mix" for my mexican mince base is:

2-3 tablespoons crushed/dried cumin seeds (use 4 if you're using fresh habaneros for your chillis)
    1-2 teaspoons crushed coriander seeds
1 teaspoon paprika (mainly for colour)
Your own level of chilli sauce, raw chillis, or powdered chilli.

I just fry my mince and onion in a couple cloves of garlic, add half a tin of tomato puree, those spices, a tablespoon of blairs mega death sauce, and a few chopped jalapenos :)

Ever since I had fajitas in Mexico, I've been trying to duplicate the taste ... and have not yet managed. :(

Interestingly the steak I got from Zert's (family/kids restaurant at Darling Hbr in Syd) had a similar taste to it ... so it must be some spice stuff they use.

I'll have to find some smoked paprika and see how that goes. :)

old el paso is your friend : )

lets see i think what you are looking for is something called liquid smoke. if it often used in vegetarian dishes to give the smokey flavour one would associate with bacon.

    i would try

using a bit of liquid smoke
    ancho chilli powder
    chilli chipotle <also has a smokey flavour>
    ground cumin
    garlic
    ground coriander
    fresh cilantro and parsley
    onion

i am pretty sure you can purchase good ol el paso at coles supermarkets.

I don't know whether these are the same ingredients in the Old El Paso fajita seasoning mix, but here's a copycat recipe. I just made some and it seems to imitate the stuff in the packet fairly well. Only change I made was to subsitute chicken salt for the boullion cube.
