Cheers for the heads-up - just this morning I was wondering when the next update would be released! Good timing :)

EDIT: and it's already up on iiNet's FTP server! Lovely.

There's a PPA repo forOpenOffice.org 3.1 now. Instructions for upgrading your OOo to 3.1 in Ubuntu can be found here.

Works for Hardy (Ubuntu 8.04) onwards.

This build contains an Australian English dictionary.

I believe we had to set the language to UK or US English in order to use the spell checker before.

OOo 3.0.1 included in the default Ubuntu 9.04 repos includes a proper Australian-English dictionary.

All 2.X.X versions from 8.10 and earlier did not. (As quoted, they required UK-English)

I still can't get it to work with AutoSpellcheck :( (English/Asutralian as the language)

Vista x 64 is the OS

Looks like you need it pretty bad too.

    (Sorry, couldn't resist)

    Helpful mode on:

Open up OOo Writer. Click Tools -> Options. Go to "Language Settings" and click the "+" to expand, and choose "Languages".

Under "Default Language for Documents" Select "English (Australia)". Note that it *must* have a little graphic of a tick with "ABC" on it, to indicate that there's a matching dictionary supplied. If you don't see that, select "English (UK)" instead to see if it has one. (Technically the UK and Australian dictionaries are the same, just the Aussie one has more Australian place names).

Now on the left choose "Writing Aide". Under "Options" on the right, tick "Check spelling as you type".

OK all of that. Close all open instances of OpenOffice (including the fast start tool in the system tray, if you have that running). Re-open, and you should be good to go.
