These plans aren't as new as Telstra are claiming.

They're the same plans Telstra had me choose from when I was changing over from Optus Sep/Oct last year.

Really? For me I'm paying $145 for 500Gig + landline (although I get a $20 discount/month just for asking) and the new plan is $113 for the same.

I won't be switching though because I make STD and local calls and with my current plan I'm getting them free.....on the new plans not free. So not worth me changing.

You'd be surprised what you can get by asking and doing a bit of wheeling and dealing.

It was a bit of to-ing and fro-ing but at the end of it this is what I ended up getting:

    - 500GB/month plan (no contract). (Throttled when I hit that limit, not charged per MB).
    - Once-up new customer bonus (due to coming over from Optus but don't recall how much it actually was).
    - Netgear cable modem fee waived (freight was waived too).
    - Off-contract fee waived.
    - 100Mbit speed upgrade.
    - Phone service connection waived.
(Had to get a real line connected as Optus used VOIP for their phone with handset coming straight out of the cable modem).
    - Silent number listing fee waived.

For this lot I only pay $103 per month.

I have to pay for phone calls on the land line but I don't care as we only have the phone line connected to get the bundled service discount.
There was a bit of dicking around as Telstra wouldn't provision the connection for 100Mbit until the phone line was connected (Had to wait a fortnight or so).

This shows how much Telstra are willing to budge to get you on-board if you are willing to negotiate a little.

I signed a 24 month contract for telstra cable totalling $133/month for 500 gb cable. I came from an adsl plan with another isp. Did not pay for a single thing outside my monthly contract and they installed a brand new cable into the house and supplied the modem. No wheeling and dealing Required

Oh I know, I used to bargain and get something like $600 off my account per year. They don't really seem to do those sort of monthly cash discounts anymore, but there are other things you can negotiate as you've mentioned

Soo.... Anyone with Optus cable want to report about how their speeds/congestion/international routing are?

$90 unlimited data and unlimited (all!) calls is mighty tempting over the same costs approx for unlimited adsl2+ and line rental.

It depends where you live, what node you're on.

3012 -it's shitfull after 3-4 pm, and hit-and-miss sat nights.

Occasionally international sites are unavailable for 5-10 mins.

I've had cable for the last 4 years so it wasn't a change for me. I'm on an uncongested node so my performance is fine.

But i've seen people have shockingly congested nodes. I get 100mbit flat stick in the morning to content servers like steam, during the evening it's like 60mbit, nether of them are scoff worthy.

A node is like 500 houses so saying a whole postcode doesnt help.

Well when I was on cable in the late early 2000s, I was on the East Burwood node in Melbourne, and even then it was horrifically congested. :( But Unlimited.... :Paranoid:

if you're on a congested node, you might be able to argue a discount on your bill

East burwood is a exchange and it services half of the city.

Ahh, good to know. I just recall East Burwood by name from ten years ago, maybe by traceroutes or the reverse dns names for the IP address pool I had back then. Fingers crossed for a non congested node then.
