fans of hot chips, who knows how to make oven baked chips that taste as good as deep fat fried chips mmmm :weirdo: ? the frozen chips in the supermarket are gay and not crunchy and the worst the absolute worst thing about them is after u stick them in for 15 minutes, u gotta turn them over! for best results, each freaking chip! who can be ****ed doing that? and if u don't lay out each chip and turn them over, u enjoy a bunchy of soggy undercooked, non crunchy chips.

beats me how to enjoy hot chips without the artery clogging goodness. share ur ideas

Meh, either follow directions or just dump them in the deep fryer.

I have a fan forced oven and the chips I do turn out great. Certainly don't need turning at all.

Deep fried chips do taste very good but for the convenience I'll go with oven baked. Also love the oven baked Birds Eye wedges with Sweet Chilli Dipping Sauce.

Can't you get those oven trays with holes in them - would they be better at circulating the air beneath the chips?

i have them on occasion and they turn out fine, pretty crispy / not soggy

steel tray > fan forced oven > flipping after 15min (takes like 30 seconds)

You could always shallow fry them yourself in good quality, non-artery-clogging-goodness oil (Eg: olive oil)

still the fat content, but at least it's good fat.

35 minutes at 200C in a fan-forced oven will leave them nicely crispy. Probably 40 in non fan forced.

I've grown to prefer cutting my own potatoes and shallow-frying them in vegetable oil. Mmmmmmmm.....

I tend to find chips turn out better when the fan is turned off in fan-forced ovens. Preheat to 250 degrees and leave in for 40 minutes or so.

    That's if it's a electric oven. If it's gas, you're stuffed - don't even try.

Edit: This method was perfected over many a packet of "oven perfect" birds eye or something chips in a decent electric oven.

I find this strange as the intention of the fan forced oven is to distribute the heat evenly and I find it works well. Is it all just a ruse?

ahh you just cant beat take away hot chips imho.
so cheap and way less effort/washing up - i just don't understand why people actually bother with cooking such a shitty food themselves.

If you're going to bother with effort, cook something interesting!

You wanna see some of the soggy shit some F+S shops will try and sell you...
My wifes home made fresh cut potatoes deep fried are pretty hard to beat.
Then when you go out for fish and chips and the chips flop all over the place and put grease in your hand you wish you stayed home....

I'll take fish and chip shop chips any day over over fries, i'll even drive the 2 minutes down the road to get them. Those chips with chicken salt, can't beat em! Oven fries suck hairy donkey balls. Viva la Deep Frying!

My cousin used to own a take away store..before giving him a visit one day I thought that the take away places used normal oils.. ie vegetable, sunflower or whatever the hell.
He showed me what they actually used and it was similar to solidified animal fat. Called it ola** or something.
He had boxes of the stuff, asked me to "refill" the deep fryer one day so i just opened up a box (was about 5-10KG) opened it up and just plonked the cube of fat right in, didnt take too long to melt either.
I just sat there watching it melt. Thats the sort of crap that gives you a heart attack

    It suuuuure was tasty though

What have you got against gas ovens? I've used both, and don't see a major difference between them. Cooktops are different, gas shits all over electric there.

And to the OP: just use a wire rack, and you won't have to turn your chips to prevent sogginess
