Yes, he's definitely a big lover of the 'd (as it's known).

weird user interface annoyance I'm having with Linux Mint Mate:

one of my monitors is rotated to portrait orientation.. the open apps that are active on this monitor do not take up the entire taskbar, they are all squashed to the right, leaving ~80% of that taskbar completely unused. Opening more apps etc on that monitor makes it worse, as very quickly you can no longer recognise which app is what etc, as it still refuses to use the remainder of the taskbar.

any ideas on how to solve?

Sounds like a DPI/scaling issue? You may be best to use a KDE distro for such a configuration? Perhaps take a look at the Ubuntu Mate forums and see if anything's been reported/resolved considering both operating systems are literally identical. TBH I actually prefer Ubuntu Mate by far over any Mint based distro.

    So....
    Code:
    systemctl is-failed mosquitto.service
    if [[ $? -ne 0 ]]
    then
        <DO SOMETHING BECAUSE RETURNED ERROR>
    fi

*NIX standard return 0 if OK or error number if broken, systemd returns same error number but uses TEXT "active" and "inactive" to evaluate. *clap* *clap*

you should know by now everything systemd does is not *NIX.

the most basic principle of 'do one thing, do it well'

Pottering should be a Microsoft developer, not linux. his overcomplicate crap philosophy would fit right in there.

Don't you know that you should be using DBus? It's so compact, secure, and well designed!

I have to say, encrypting home partitions terrifies me also - It's something I generally avoid.

nothing, LUKS is stable, well tested.

having pottering cobble together some overcomplicated insecure, faulty POS is not a good idea. And don't say he won't. he's gone and overcomplicated, added insecurities, and added inexcusable bugs to everything he's touched.

My KDE Neon install got the 5.17 update today. Very nice, seriously, this DE just keeps getting better and better.
