Well I thought I'd start a pie review thread as I am a member of a pie review Facebook group and thought people would appreciate knowing the decent pie shops and where to avoid

    I’ll start

    My 1st review

    Drummoynes Bakehouse Cafe
    Www.Drummoynesbakehousecafe.com.au

    Mon 530am 4pm Tuesday - Sunday 530am - 5pm

Has toilets own carpark and onstreet parking

Cheese & Bacon Steak pie $6.80

2/6 So Epic and my go to for pie

From the first bite could taste the bacon all through it as well as Chunky steak pieces.

Not foil tray and can be eaten with one hand without a mess.

Also their Lemon Meringue tart is my go to treat

    Nice.
Bite me is my local at Mt Colah.

The Satay Chicken is great but all their pies are good.
    Blueberry pie is superb.

My other favorite is Brooky Pies at Brookvale.

Was better when the old couple owned it but still the best pies in Sydney.
    Mushroom Pie is awesome.
Apricot pie is the best I've ever had.

Those little packets aren't enough if there's a lot of pastry, either. I get nicer tomato sauce for home, too from a local sauce maker.

You're speaking my language... every Friday night, 2 posh chunky beef pies from IGA (fresh section) and sometimes a sausage roll too. :D

    Bring on the pie reviews!

But sticking tomato sauce on a good pie is sacrilege anyway! *dons asbestos suit*

I don't know about sacrilege, but if a pie is any good, I don't put sauce on it.
    Now, this is sacrilege......
They sell "chunky" pies (meat or chicken and leek) up at the 7-11 and they are quite nice, I sometimes get one on the way home from the dog park. There. You can banish me if you want..... :D

Yeah, I'm big on sauce, but won't put it on a decent pie. Frozen shit I'll drown in it. :D

I just stick to the woolies chicken and vegetable pie. Tastes better than the meat pie version.

Big fan of a potato pie, next best is mushroom, even better if you can find one with both

Posting here to remember to review my next pie

No banishment needed... pies are in an exempt category, a pie is a pie anytime even a servo pie. :leet:

Thanks. I'm quite fussy, the usual "servo pie" are pretty yuck IMO, but those "better" ones are quite nice. Maybe because they've got hunks of meat instead of mince so there are fewer dodgy gizzards in there? Although, many servos now have "proper pies" so maybe times have changed. A lot of places across the nullarbor and out in the country had/have really nice homemade pies.

In on first page of a Great Idea thread.
I look forward to reading some spirited discussion and helpful/interesting reviews regarding the GOAT handheld meat packet.

I usually deal with the sauce-or-no-sauce question as I would for a steak. If it's good enough, it doesn't need any sauce.
But let's be honest, it's probably not going to be that good at 2am outside a motorway service stop, or standing in the kitchen buck-naked and swaying gently in a nonexistent breeze while waiting for the oven to go DING.
    So on goes the sauce.

Obligatory shoutout to a much loved Local Legend just a bit north of my home turf. Always worth the drive, never been disappointed.

Our local pie shop makes some absolutely amazing pies - my go to is the Steak Bacon & Cheese pie, closely followed by Steak Diane or a Pepper Steak. I'm not a big fan of sausage rolls but they are pretty bloody good too. The wife swears by the Minted Lamb, Potato & Pea pie too. Oh and their apple pie is amazing too.

Fuck I think I need to go there for lunch tomorrow after thinking about their deliciousness.. :upset:

Upper Crust Pies is another local legend on Sydney's Northern Beaches, although I haven't had any jobs up that way for several years so I don't know if it's still under same ownership and as good as it used to be.

I can vaguely see the beginnings of a "Best Aussie Pies" tour map starting here.
How's that for a road trip? ~15,000km around Straya, stopping for the best pies along the way.
I reckon a Suitably Dedicated and Charismatic Individual could probably get some sponsorship/investment to film that...

Edit: Although I note that what we really have here is more of a general collection of random thoughts about pies and "I went to this place one/a few times and the pies were good".
So I'll suggest a standard judging format:
    - Crust Quality: fresh vs. frozen, flaky vs. dense, light vs. heavy, long-term structural integrity vs. "better eat it quick before it all falls apart", etc.
    - Filling Quality: artisanal handmade vs. mass-produced mystery meat, Average Gristle Content, Overall Chunkiness, quantity of promised extras (e.g. mushrooms, veges if Chicken & Veg), general mouthfeel and tastiness
    - Overall Experience Quality: were you charged a stupid extra fee for sauce, did it make you vom-vom at some later point in the day, etc.

I'm a big curry beef fan... but recently at the canberra farmers market, Gum Tree Pies from Yackandandah have been present. They have a Panang Curry Pumpkin that will change your life.
