When it's released to general public, soft launch or not, it's no longer beta. It's not rocket surgery.

apparently there's a power saving mode that turns the screen off, but lets the game still run... i'm yet to find it

in settings - battery saver mode

just replaces the game screen with a dark gray image when the phone orients away from you (like in a pocket to held to your side when walking)

just be careful with battery saving mode, sometimes when it wakes the game doesn't respond to touch.

Yeah I'm level 13 and have a Gyrados at CP1071 atm, not super hard to achieve. Went for a walk with some friends down at Cronulla yesterday afternoon. Did around 6-7km and caught about 150 Pokemon, transferred pretty much all of them and then leveled the Pokemon I wanted to use for battles.

I can't get the game to keep running when I put it upside down in my pocket even though battery saver is enabled. It still shuts down the game and locks the phone after a while and stops counting distance. How do I fix it?

Anyone have a key to which you should keep, and what to evolve? I see the skills, and they are always different. Attack types are different, some are higher in points than others, the bottom skill has different bars regardless of how high or low the skill points are and CP does not affect it.
What do you keep, what do you junk?

I think the CP of the moves goes up proportionally to the CP of the Pokemon themselves. I'm yet to see differences in move sets though. The strategy I'm using at the moment is focus more on evolving, then power up. Powering up a Pokemon that's not at full evolution might be a waste of time, as you'd probably end up discarding it for another of the same time that has a higher CP.

The only obvious exception is those with no evolutions, like Pinsir.

I saw a crazy little lure session going on today down at the local Dome coffee shop / Library, someone or some people were taking advantage of the 2 poke stops right next to each other with 2 lures (1 for each).
