Time for my first worklog on a beige nightmare.

It will be a dual PSU, dual CPU, dual core, dual GPU videocard pile of shit!

Specs (so far)

Asus DSBV-DX Dual Xeon board
6x512MB 5300F FB-DIMMS
One CHEAP 350Watt PSU + One CHEAP 500Watt PSU
4870X2
250GB DRIVE
Floppy/DVD

Ok, two PSU's.

We can rebuild it, but i don't want to spend alot of money.. or time.

Done and done.





I trust this PSU, it's brand is "YAHA", fantastic.

 

As a rep of the health and safety board I approve of this build

 

Oh gosh..... this can not end well....

 

See using one good PSU would lack the redundancy of two shitty ones when one inevitably loses the magic smoke.

Can i split the load of the 4870X2 over two PSU's?

I.E. have one PCI-E coming from one PSU and the other from the other PSU?

 

Yes, but remember, you've maybe got 500W total there. Generic PSUs can seldom deliver more than 250W before going kaboom, regardless of what the label says.

Also, given how old those PSUs look, I'd pop the covers on them and check the caps. If one of them had bad caps, it's gonna destroy your hardware.

 

500watt total should be plenty *

The PSU's are good, i can remember running an 8800Ultra off the 500Watt back in the days and it didn't complain.

 

ROFL... it doesn't matter if it was perfect "back in the day" - that day was 6 years ago. What matters is what they are working like now.

The capacitors used in most power supplies of that era were absolute crap, so they dry out and stop doing the filtering that they were originally installed for. The fact that you are using no-name cheapy PSUs makes it even more scary.... those PSUs would have had only marginal filtering even when first built.

I've had a look inside the PSU's, none are bulging or leaking - should be fine, if one explodes then so be it, it's mainly a throw together of spare/useless parts anyway

 

Excellent - they must have been high end generic PSUs, so that's cool.

Are you gunna mod the PSUs? Sleeve them?

Or maybe just wrap in electrical tape?

 

Sleeve the wires with electrical tape. Should try and make this pc that poster build for the ghetto mod thread.

If you're really after fire-hazard, ghetto-modability and all-in-one functionality, splice the power cables coming from the rear of the CPU (the 240v ones... Mmmm, yummo, electricity) so you only have to plug in one socket.
