I hope so, then I can consolidate and get rid of my One S and have a single device. All it does it play 4K discs because the PS4 can't.

i have found that the X Box has really improved for media playback over when i first tried it, Plex in particular and i can throw just about any format at it and it's happy - also the app is way more responsive and less crashy. Hopefully they sort that kind of thing in the PS5.

I'm really curious about storage. Sony have said streaming will be a big focus (which I'm against). Microsoft already have a streaming focused console, and folks like Apple continue to price storage non-linearly to drive people to cloud storage.

I hope the PS5 bucks this trend, but I'm pessimistic.

there was some reports yesterday that the Sony/MS partnership would NOT effect the PS5 being the beast that it looks like it will be and internal staff were reportedly concerned.

if you are concerned about anything it would be a discless PS - that would be my greatest concern. The day these two consoles go discless in every SKU ebgames/gamestop etc can just lock the doors and throw away the keys.

also Sony are touting back compat heavily and without a disc drive this would be harder to achieve.

Looks like Sony is putting a premium on storage as some news yesterday was that they are trying to eradicate load times. The demo they ran was the ps4 pro taking 8s to load and the 5 was .8s.
Leveraging the nvme drives I imagine, possibly pcie gen4 drives too

I'm definitely worried about that. But to be honest, I see it as an inevitably.

My rate of new game consumption has dramatically crashed in the last few years. I can see this hobby just moving on without folks like us. Which, honestly, is fine for me. I've got enough old stuff to play to keep me happy. Just a bit of a shame, is all.

Secondary concern about a discless PS is their slow as hell infrastructure. Sony's stuff is the the only platform I still see downloads sit within the KB/s range of speeds intead of MB/s.

Yeah playstation network is the worst. Usually takes 2 days for a game to download for me and game trailers in the store won't play half the time. But on my laptop, my internet's zippy.

Slightly off-topic, but try changing your DNS to google 8.8.8.8 or quad 9, i had the same issue until i did that now i'm getting 10MB/s most days i download something from the store.

I do however agree that i don't like the idea of going full disc less, especially when the digital download licenses are a bit dubious. Maybe they'll release a few models, one without a drive.

I like the idea of the super fast SSD, but the issue remains of disc to SSD to install and I can't see the PS5 been cart based.

What’s the issue? Games install super quick on PS4 via Blu-ray and a lot of games let you begin playing before installation is complete. The only thing that slows you down is crazy large day 1 patches.

Buy it digital then if the physical media is too difficult for you.

I'm making a point about speed, you seem to have missed that.

The SSD will give us speedy load times and overall performance improvement. Do you really feel that Install times are a high priority?

It's not the biggest deal, but I just remember the days of putting a game in and playing it no waiting, I hate getting home and then waiting for install.

yeah zero point buying physical media.

buy it, still have to download 40GB cause first day patch crap.

may as well just buy digital cause you have to download it all anyway.
