Too soon, his younger brother is having his goodbye. This time my daughter is old enough to be upset about it, a shame this will be one of her early memories.

    Goodbye Zander we love you

    Boof.
He came. He "row'd". He ate chicken.
Going to miss you, you big dumb fuck.

EDIT: So bit more of background now that it's not so fresh. Boof had FIV and was getting into the late stages of the illness. His peak was 8.5kg, but at the end he was a gaunt 4.2kg. His teeth were rotting out but couldn't be removed due to his weight and the likelihood he wouldn't have survived the surgery. Rotting teeth are a part of FIV it seems and have to be managed lest they get infected and cause their demise.

At the end he was still very much his chicken loving self, lively and very much happy but the wastage was starting to become apparent. He was stiff and slightly wobbly on his feet. He had a couple of brushes with things that we thought were going to end him but he recovered, however the interval between those was much too close for our comfort.

We made the decision to give him a peaceful exit at home on our bed because he was terrified of going to the vets and we didn't want that to be his last experience. We booked it a week in advance, had him on pain killers to make him comfy as possible, and pumped as much roast chicken into him that he wanted.

For a once feral tomcat, he turned out to be the biggest lush imaginable and incredibly gentle as well and by the end you'd have never known his past. I hoped we gave him his best indoor easy life.

How he was in his last week.

    RIP Boof,

My parents cat Ruby had a similar end recently, was not FIV ( Kidney failure). Was just skin and bones by the end. Its a bit painful watching them waste away.

She was also an Ex street cat, Took many years but by the end she was a proper lap cat and hated it when people left the house. A far cry from the first 2 years they had her when she only came in for food.

we lost Pokey too. Almost 8 years to the day since she hatched :( being a commercial red I think that’s a good innings, unfortunately they’re bred to make lots of eggs, not lead a long life :(

We decided to put down our dog on the weekend. It got to the point where we had tried all the medication and the vet said he was in too much pain.

For those with multiple dogs, how did your other ones go after their buddy is gone??

    Sorry for your loss.

In a nutshell, they miss them. Same as we do. Depends on the other dog as to how that shows. Some dogs are okay with it, others miss them terribly. Dogs are individuals, same as us. Unfortunately you'll just have to keep an eye on the dog or dogs you still have and help them through it however you can. Can confirm that extra cuddles always helps, both the dog and the person.
