Flights are back at Point Cook, Victoria after their break over christmas so figured it was a nice day to get out and enjoy the Roulettes.

I must say that I'm really struggling with this lens.. Sigma 120-300/f2.8 sports. I'm really starting to think that the 2x TC is really destroying image quality, especially when its at the 300/600mm end.. Comparitively speaking, my canon 400/5.6 is significantly sharper and can't help but think i've made a very expensive mistake!

Still, there were some nice shots, but the keeper rate is well down.

You are always, as far as I know, going to suffer degredation of sharpness with a TC when at wife open or close to. I stand to be corrected of course.

They are nice shots though, they are sports shots so are never going to be crystal clear.

when i was looking at the sigma 120-300 i thought 2x tc would degrade the quality a lot, especially at the long end. so i ended up with stacking a 1.4x/2x tc on a 200mm prime instead.

i like these photos though. wish i could get to air shows more often.

    Just an update..

I had this message sitting in my 'others' folder for 4 weeks without even realising it was there..

"Hi Duncan, ignore the alias FB name, I'm Dan from the Roulettes (we tried sending a message from the official account but couldn't make it work?). I'd like to send you a signed poster from the team in appreciation of the great photo's you posted from Pt Cook last week. Are you able to provide a postal address? Cheers, Dan."

    Feeling pretty chuffed :)

I guess that useless sigma was good for something ;)

TBH i'm very happy with my sigma 120-300 OS. I think you're just too used to the lenses gods use :p

haha yeah.. i just want something that is long and sharp... i wanna nail some cracking shots...

Oh well, next weekend is the 100th anniversary of the point cook airbase, which is 2 days of airshows :) Needless to say I'll be there for both days so will be giving the sigma a thorough flogging :)

That said, I placed an order for a tamron 150-600 today.. delivery in march, sometime..

I didn't know that event was on. Although I don't follow planes too closely, I do like watching them fly. I might come along for this event with my sigmabazooka too. Would be nice to take it out for a spin after a month long hiatus!

Yeah.. it hasn't been widely publicized considering it's almost an avalon airshow type scale.. You need to prebook tickets as non are sold at the gate, and I'd catch the train to williams landing and then get a free shuttle bus.. the traffic around point cook will be shocking..

Do you have a gimble? I can't see anyone hand holding the sigma for a day..

I've hand held the sigma for an entire day on many occasions. I find hand holding it is better because most of the time i'm on the move and I tend to find it's not heavy enough to obstruct me from moving freely. If i'm plonked in the one spot all day long I will carry with me my monopod.

I'm not much into plane photography but your formation pics are quite good.
