Good news, Canon users! (EDIT: And some Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and Leica users)

Microsoft have released a codec pack that brings RAW support to Windows Explorer and Live Photo Gallery.

So what, you say? It means that those of us who use Canon DSLR's with 64-bit Windows finally get thumbnails in Windows Explorer (and standard Open dialogues)!

Great news for CR2...but what about NEF? Nikon Imaging only has a 32-bit solution :(

The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack provides support for the following device formats:

So yeah, I only mentioned Canon because I thought everyone else already had 64 bit support, but there's the full list.

Do they show up when setting a windows desktop background? Not that fussed about thumbnails as there's an alternative x64 cr2 plugin, but it doesn't work for windows backgrounds..

I have had support for Canon Raw files on X86-64bit in windows for ages... Pretty sure the codec came from the canon website? But none the less, it's pretty cool.

i've been using "FastPictureViewerCodecPack" for a few years now, gives full canon and nikon raw file previews and thumbnails in windows explorer.

There used to be a free version but they have since moved to paid version. ITs well worth the money though.

I'll give the windows version a go though and see whats faster to show thumbnails and loading of raw files. I recall MS having a codec pack before that was very slow to load files.
