Cheaper and cheaper by the day.

Srsly, go buy a Babyhawk R.... Great beginner quad.. Bounces off almost anything. I flew in an undercover car park last week, was going up and above the pipes on the roof etc.. Hit so much concrete but still flys fine.

 

Yeah that video you showed me was pretty cool.


Anyone know much about the DJI Tello ? Any good? Any compatability of equipment etc with other DJI stuff or is it just a branding exercise?

 

not worth it, it is really just a toy for kids and doesn't pack any of the smarts or high end processing found on the rest of the fleet. It has crappy little brushed motors like the $30 drones from china instead of a proper brushless setup

Spark is cheap enough to be entry level and is a fantastic little drone, just doesn't have the range the more expensive ones do (still goes like 2km... for a thing the size of your hand that is plenty enough to get me worried)

 

a work colleague bought one the other day, the bundle with the bluetooth controller, extra batteries and charger dock. it surprisingly good, definitely not the quality or capability of the spark, but then again it was under $300 too.

the biggest issue with it is wind, but it's not much bigger than a tinywhoop, so you can't expect too much. the brushed motors are not awesome, but if they put brushless motors and speed controllers on it, up goes the price.

[edit] the hardware is also made by Ryze, it's really the onboard and controller software that is DJI. to my knowledge there is no way to use them with the DJI goggles, because no Occusync hardware and no DJI controller, but you can use a VR headset that is compatible with the phone you use. the video feed is pretty impressive, I've got a video the colleague catured on his phone and it's streets ahead of the scratchy horrible air-to-ground stuff you see from race quads. more like what an onboard Runcam could cature.

 

EMAX Babyhawk R quadcopters...

Dr1fty et al - I don't know ANYTHING about these so please, EDUMACATE me.

There seem to be 3 models available

Babyhawk R (2" props)
Babyhawk R (3" props)
Babyhawk R Pro (2.5" props, and numerous other upgrades).

pros/cons of each?

You got the 2".. Which is just the BHR
Then you got the BHR 3"
They have recently released the BHR 2.5" Pro....

As alot of us already had BHR's... We just bought the 2.5" arms... It makes it not so twitchy.. easier to fly etc.. The 3inch is just a bit bigger..

But, mine bounces off posts, concrete and all sorts.. Bigger = heavier... Not always ideal..

Cheap, but can record flights etc.. Some like the box, some like the bino type ones. (fatshark) I couldn't afford fancy shit, but this does great IMO.

The BHR to start with for me, then a mate convinced me to go 2.5".. and yeah, I noticed a difference.

As for TX.. Whatever you can afford.. I bought a second hand Dx6i from a mate for $100.. Then a receiver from local hobby shop and ripped it out of it's case and stuck it under the hood.

I think Banggood or gearbest are probably the best places to get the quad...

Get the Litchi app and you can use your phone in a pair of VR goggles. Only $30 for the app and you get HD FPV and awesome waypoint navigation and camera functions.

It voids your DJI warranty though.

to my knowledge, the only way of using aftermarket goggles with DJI gear is with the Inspire line (which have a HDMI output), or on the smaller aircraft, you have to use Litchi and the goggles bind to the phone.

Cheap knockoff of DJI drones. No real price difference either!

Found a local mob who primarily sell racing drone parts, so i'm tempted to give them a go - they seem pretty good from what I've heard (https://www.lethalfpv.com.au/).

Which brings me to my question - if I'm wanting to build my own starter racing drone (with FPV), are there any good sites / guides I can use as a primer?
