hey guys, reasonably new to A/V stuff, but a few months back I picked up a Yamaha receiver off these forums which has been running absolutely awesome in a 6 channel set up in my room.

Anyways I'm in the market for an active subwoofer to go along with it. I'm wanting something with a bit of boom as I listen to a bit of electronic music and will also watch movies with it.

Budget is $300. Don't mind if new or used. Recommendations please! :D

Trevor Lee's Audio in Kew used to always have the Richter Krakatoa on their eBay page for about $350. They don't seem to have it listed anymore, but as of last time I was in there they still stocked them - might be worth calling to find out! I bought one, love it for the price.

Very well looked upon subs, and if you're strict on budget you probably won't be able to do much better!

you really do get what you pay for.............stretch and get the paradigm. You will find the cheaper ones like you have mentioned are too loose and boomy........it will drown out everything else. I listen to psytrance and prog trance most of the day so i get what your listening to. you will only end up upgrading the cheaper sub as you wont be happy with it......so get the better sub to start with

You really do get what you pay for. They are generally as Steffan72 said loose and boomy and intact quite hollow sounding. Having said that if you're on a budget and plan to upgrade at a later date hey thheres no harm in going the second hand route. Pop over to DTV forums with you're requirement and Im certain you'll find what you need.

In terms of brand theres just too many haha. Paradigm, Velodyn. B & W. Heck if you're into supporting Australian brands Ritcher and Krix offer some gems too. But hey if you can at least audition a sub prior to buying and you're happy with it. Too easy!

Slightly off topic - I recently acquired the subwoofer out of the paradigm CT-110 5.1 system but haven't been able to find out much about it. How does it compare to the rest of Paradigm's range?
