Recommend me an 85" TV

So looking for a new TV, and the mrs wants a large one (we moved from a 100+ inch projector in old house)

Recommend me an 85", 4k screen, mostly used for TV (movies, netflix, sport - no gaming at this stage)
Long warranty would be useful.
All the usual apps like netflix, stan etc - if it had Plex then awesome too.

Budget is somewhat flexible, 3-4k?
Looking for bang for buck rather than the top of the line.

Will be used in mixed lighting, not too bright but not a dark home theatre.

Lot of the online reviews have model numbers which dont match up with AU too so thats annoying

Really no one can recommend anything , We can tell what we like and what suits us, But like all things what one person likes another hates.

Your best bet is to visit a retailer and let your ears and eye's be the judge. Failing that, send me the 4 grand, I'll buy what suits me and they
can deliver it to you. It must be really, really good because I liked it.

I would put more stock in analysis and comparison by specialist reviews than eyeballing it in a store environment with the 'attract' settings.

 

Yes, and we aren't really reviewers. We just use the tv's we purchase and can recommend based on our own personal experiences.

Personally I'd be googling to find out what would be the best in the 80-85 range and crawl through the reviews and after that you tend to get an idea of the good and bad from the sets in that range. That narrows the selection down.

From there I then go and google the few that I'm interested in and see what actual user reviews are like for each of the sets.

 

That's all very well IF the OP understands all the technical waffle the reviewer offers to the un'godly. Really have you ever considered some of the things these reviewers offer , I really think there paid by the word printed. And they never, ever offer a bad review, as that will effect the advertisers dollar. And lets face it all these publications rely on there advertisers to survive.
"What Hi Fi" are a prime example of this, They would name a brand of corn flakes, product of the month if there advertisers paid enough cash.

 

Size of screen and budget you aren’t going to be getting anything high end. I would benoooking at Samsung qled

 

a few points

• Rtings looks good, but the model numbers dont reconcile in australia - do you just strip the last 4-5 characters off and try and hope its the same model?
  Any links to australian review sites would be welcome.
• I am aware that store viewing doesnt really offer a real world experience, hence me posting here, hopefully for people who have lived with them.
• I am aware I wont be getting the high-end TV's for my budget, hence looking for bang for buck.
• As far as the jargon, yes am trying to make sense of the various q/p/f/z/q LED variants.

convinced the mrs do step down to a 75" and ordered a samsung QN85A today (Samsung promo, $400 back with a soundbar, + 5% off due to RAC)

For sports and movies I'd always look at 120-200hz TV's as it makes a difference to an extent. But most 200hz tv's are upsampled from 120hz, unless you drop the extra moola on a genuine 200hz.

Sounds like the QN85A is a great TV, I’m sure you’ll love it. I’m in the market for an 85in TV too and looking at the QN85A. Difficult as there’s no good reviews! The rtings reviews are all with smaller models which are different panels … all the 85in TVs are VA panels whilst the smaller sizes are ADS/IPS… makes it really hard. I’m looking for something with good brightness and wide viewing angles for an open plan living area…

VA would mean poor viewing angles but all subjective i'd say - the almost double pricing for the 10" didnt seem worth it for me, especially in a small room.

Yeh I'm sort of tempted but ALDI TV's do not get a good rep. Poorer than average based what I've seen.

 

I see you've already found a TV you like, but for future (and anyone else's) reference, you can compare models on rtings, and then just search for the corresponding australian model

Dont buy samsung

 

If you want everything you watch to look like ass big and cheap is the way to go.

 

Why's that? In the price range OP is looking at, LG is the only real competition from my similar searching. What would you recommend?
