eneloops are great. Aldi LSD's are also useful in a pinch.

I used to use eneloops (still have a bag of them somewhere)but my kids never recharged them so it was always a panic rush to charge them when a new toy arrived.

We use the single use german alkaline from bunnings now -- about $9 for 30.
We might go thru a 2-3 packs a year but it is very convenient esp when we are away and dont want to pack the charger.

    ed: bunnings batteries

the chargers are small enough to pack...
but for what you are going through... still worth the rechargeables

i know when i was a kid i always had nicads and made sure they where fully charged, or you would see me with them outside in the direct sun to try and get some more use out of them while the flat ones where charging

^ Pre-charged. Retains 85+% of their charge after a year or so of use. Extremely reliable.

There are other brands that are similar (Imedion's for example). The Eneloops probably tend to get recommended more as they often can be had for quite cheap.

they aren't just batteries, they are the last batteries you will ever need to buy.

I kept buying normal batteries because I'd forgotten to put the rechargeables in the charger, until I discovered Eneloop. Being able to open the packet and use them is golden.

The only better deal they give is when you can grab free postage with it. Super awesome deal then.
