and I love it.

400 head company, all over S.E.A, runs a treat over thin pipes. Has integrated IM with full teleconferencing video/audio, runs my document management systems, runs my helpdesk ticketing system, runs my intranet with associated PMO and extranet for stakeholders outside my network. Email Vault addon is easy as piss.

I integrated 40 exchange users into Lotus notes last year and they all got cranky with having to change, 6 months later they sing its praises.

Its cheap, requires less grunt that exchange, easily clustered and is just generally kick ass.

 

I was using Lotus Notes from 2008 to December last year. Unfortunately my company was a little slow on the uptake, and we were still using version 5.0 (from 2002). It was shit....

Fortunately we have now migrated to exchange, and I estimate my productivity has increased by at least 20% (more time to spend on OCAU).

 

Still use it... the idea that you can't copy folders from one mail file to another without a script is a bit ludicrous. Apart from that it seems to do its job.

Lots of big orgs are heavily invested in the lotus stack. I'm glad I no longer work for one such place.

Wow. As this is a field I have no idea or experience about, I'm curious what alternatives there are on the market other than Lotus Notes that could handle all those tasks? Or is it all a combination of multiple technologies?

Slow and clunky P.O.S.

Moving away from it as we speak.

 

People call it Bloated Goats for good reason. The reasons I dislike it can mainly be classed as bloat in the client:
- It runs on an Eclipse runtime which runs on Java
- It has a stupid proprietary rich text markup format that corporate people love to make multi-megabyte emails
- It has other stupid proprietary protocols like an ever-changing Sametime protocol for instant messaging

But from a design/architecture point of view it's very nice and does most stuff well.

 

What versions are you on?

 

We have a global workforce of 30,000 people, all on Lotus Notes -> version 8.5

I don't understand how people think it is clunky and slow. 8.5.3 runs a treat. Never had any "clunky or slow" issues.

What are you comparing it to? One-Dimension-Outlook ?

 

It takes ages to start up, we have quite many plugins into Notes.

It will very often take 6-8 minutes to start the interface, even if I load certain tasks as the OS starts...

Having worked with it for 13+years, it is cluncky and slow, and V8.02 and earlier were buggy as hell.

At least 8.5 is better/more stable, but still slow.

ps: Once up and running, quite ok, just startup times that peeve me a bit...

 

I use it now, and in my previous job and don't have an issue with it. I think it does a number of things better than Outlook/Exchange. It was a bit of a change coming from Outlook/Exchange originally, but I don't think about it much now, just send off a few emails and book meetings, etc.

 

Anything is possible if you really want to do it.

I'm totally over the idea of dealing with email. It's such a commodity problem, and I just don't care any more. Outsource the lot to Google, and don't talk to me about it ever again.

Ahh, the good ole sunk costs fallacy. It's pretty much all legacy enterprise systems vendors like HP/IBM have going for them these days.

Agreed, the only people who should be dealing with email infrastructure are those providing it as a service to others. Its the simplest thing to outsource and suits it very easily.
