The Google Doodle that came up today in celebration of the Olympics is Champion Island, a 16-bit styled game with sport minigames (reminiscent of eg. California Games), a JRPG-style island to explore, anime cut scenes, side quests, all with a Japanese folklore theme.

Wizard of Legend is a fast paced dungeon crawler with rogue-like elements that emphasizes dynamic magical combat. Quick movement and even quicker use of spells will allow you to chain spells together to unleash devastating combinations against your enemies!

FYI - If you haven't guessed already, I get a boner for modern pixel art / sprite games.

Death Trash is an open-world, singleplayer role-playing game with handcrafted levels, a strong story campaign and optional local co-op gameplay.

The game features real-time gameplay with ranged and melee combat, stealth, multiple choice dialogue, an inventory of items and worms, a crafting system, and skills like pickpocketing and puking.

"Forgive me Father". Retro style "cardboard cut out" bad guys, hand drawn art, cosmic horror / Cthulhu themes. Looks fun.

1C seems to be pumping a lot of effort into retro FPS atm, just saw this on Nostalgia Nerd the other day, i dunno i'm wary of 1C, they tend to make very middle of the road FPS games.

I have played/seen a number of Ultima/retro-inspired RPGs lately. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but some of those I have been following.
    • The Lurking 1 & 2 games, both resembles and plays very much like the early Ultima era. Both available for purchase on Itch.
    • Skald: Against the Black Priory, resembles Ultima VI era. Demo available on Steam, but waiting for the full game to land.
    • Code of the Savage, resembles the Ultima VII or UO era. Demo coming soon to Itch.

This came out, it's cheap enough I guess, be interested to see if they've improved it as it was never one of my favourite games on the Amiga. The Steam reviews all say it's improved due to them pulling the camera out so you can see what's coming which tbh makes me more interested as it was definitely one of the shortcomings of this game.

also nice to see it's not an attempted cash in but more like an indie/student project. Made by these guys - https://www.sumo-digital.com/news/sumo-digital-academy-meet-the-cohort

Powerslave / Exhumed is getting the Nightdive HD remaster treatment.

I played this a while ago on Sega Saturn, and while technically impressive, wasn't a fan of running out of ammo trying to hit annoying scorpions below you with pre-analogue gamepad controls. Made me have terrible flashbacks to Daikatana mosquito swatting.

Hopefully Nightdive do their thing and make the HD version less annoying.

I didn't play that in the day. Just reading about it now, it sounds like the PC & console versions were quite distinct from one another in terms of gameplay. And the console versions (PS & Saturn) were different from each other again, in terms of assets & levels. I'll try to sample them when I get a chance, so I can dig whatever combined magic Nightdive is cooking up here.

No Unreal engine ports to be seen, Lobotomy used their own engine on the Saturn.

Speaking of Night Dive, if you haven't tried it yet they have an excellent demo on steam for their upcoming System Shock release

Ah nice. I tried the original game and "special edition" or whatever it was with the modified controls, and it drove me a little insane. Just couldn't deal with it.

I'm hoping the remaster has more modern controls for this idiot.

I know a lot of people these days don't take videos unless it's hollywood-level production-wise and the host is not like a charismatic super bloke you instantly want to have beers with, but give it a chance, it's a good in-depth look into a game which deserves more attention.
