Voting is now open. Vote for as many games as you like. Poll closes in 8 days time, at which point we play!

We're starting this one a week early, because I'm excited.

Click here if you want an explanation of what this is, and why we're doing it.

Nominate the game we'll play and discuss for the whole of February 2017 in this thread. On Tuesday 24 January nominations will close, I'll add a poll, and we'll vote on the game there. Votes close Jan 31, and we start playing Feb 1.

For now, nominate away. Rules are similar to other retro threads - the original game must be 10 years old or older (released January 2007 or earlier). Please keep nominations to one per person, so the voting list stays sane.

Keep in mind for the first few months we're going to try and make these titles as accessible as possible, so consider people who might have limited access to original hardware. If possible, for the first few months, let's try to nominate games that are either readily available on services like Steam or GoG (either as originals or re-releases), or are easily emulated on low end PCs and Raspberry Pis, or on archive.org's "play in your browser" service. See the FAQ thread linked to above for sites offering inspiration and ideas of which titles to pick.

When nominating, please share a small amount of information about the game and maybe a screenshot or video. Handy links include MobyGames, HG101 or Wikipedia links.

If someone else has already nominated a game, feel free to second their nomination. If there are a tonne of games on offer, I'll whittle the poll down to seconded games only.

Day of The Tentacle (original or remaster)

Free on PS+ this month and also part of the current humble bundle, beat the $US6.79 and get it for PC.

Yes, any platform is up for grabs. Most certainly not limited to PC/Wintel.

Extra points to the first person to nominate an LCD handheld title. :)

I've not played either, but why MOO2 over the original?

Zero Mission is based on the same story as the original Metroid, but plays very differently (more similar to Super Metroid [i.e.: Metroid 3], but also with a lot of new mechanics). It also has entirely new sections added within.

I'd consider "Metroid" and "Metroid: Zero Mission" to be entirely different games, rather than just ports of the same game.

There was a lot of that in the early days. Small dev teams who thought nobody would notice, and an absence of the Internet meant people would more freely do these things and get away with them commercially.

Today we have instant worldwide scrutiny of everything that comes out, so there's far less of that (unless you're talking isolated incidents like middle eastern or Chinese developers making software only for their local market).

I too have a soft spot for the Amiga Turrican, I'd play 2 over 1 and definitely consider the Super or Mega variants on console too. That might make things a bit tougher to align everyone though.

Seriously Turrican 2 had one of the best title screens on the system.

Back when games didn't have stupid mandatory tutorial levels, and the demo screen taught you everything you need to know.

I've been gaming for over three decades now. Every time a modern game spends 10 minutes teaching me how to jump or attack, I have to facepalm so hard.

Agreed. We're still working this out, but let's stick to one nomination per person per month.
