F.E.A.R.: First Encounter Assault Recon is a first-person shooter developed by Monolith Productions and published by Vivendi. It was released on October 18, 2005 on PC, with XBOX 360 and PS3 ports following in 2006 and 2007.

Yes ladies and gents, This months Retro Lets Play, is non-other than the ever cult following, rather scare inducing, not lacking any luster, The one, the only, F E A R!!!

You play as Point Man for the First Encounter Assault Recon unit, a military complex ghost busting squad essentially. You’re after Paxton Fettel, who is psychically connected to an army of clones and is seeking revenge on Armacham corporation for the abuse he and others suffered in the past. Meanwhile you keep seeing hallucinations of Alma, a little girl in a red dress who can melt peoples skin off.

    Sounds pretty neat right?

Gonna hold it there with the story line as i don't wanna spoil the whole thing for you just in case you've been living under a rock and missed the last 20 years of pc game development, rivaling the (did/did not happen) landing on the moon.

Graphically the game has dated slightly, but don't let that put you off, its no slouch by any means and the AI is still a lot better than some of the newer titles coming out these days.

    (what's going on here?)

Absolutely one of the best old skool FPS games around. Its also been updated to support widescreen and a bunch of graphic updates available right there in the games options menu for you. When did that get included? beats me, but its there now.

Where can you get it? (come on, I am sure you've got this on CD somewhere?)

    Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/21090/FEAR/
    (don't buy it from there)

    /gloom tone off/
    GOG: -90% F.E.A.R. Platinum on GOG.com
(Buy it here if you need to, $0.99 on special atm) and includes Extraction Point and F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate.) yep 99c, but the sale ends in 24hrs.. (which is why i posted this today, slightly early) (edit.. its a 1.50AUD, thanks MUT) :)
    200w.gif
(slightly bright tone for this game, but hey its 99 cents)
You might also be able to find it ElseRom, but at 99cents, I am not even going to bother searching that up for you. Soz.

    /Gloom tone on/

FEAR is well worth playing in 2025 if you can look past the older graphics and environments. It delivers some of the most brutal combat I’ve seen in an FPS and is a lot of gruesome fun.

(Whos that kid?, and wth is the matter with her eyes? )

Anyways, I've just peed my pants after watching that little video, so I am gonna go put some new pants on.. enjoy..

Seems like it might be time to get the ol' 360 out and give this a replay.

    Ah, seems it's on the 360 backwards compatible list, so will dig it out if I can remember what box it's in;

Otherwise I might just emu it. ;)

Good choice. I played through all the F.E.A.R. games about a decade back, they were janky to get running on Win7 at the time, haven't tried again since but this might pique my interest.
There was a multiplayer only version, F.E.A.R. Combat, which I recall playing for a while after release because it was the shiny new thing, was popular at LANs because it was f2p and didn't require a CD key etc.

I eventually ragequit because everyone ended up camping with that god damned 1-shot particle weapon

Nice one Vanne, great game that. The jump scares don't work on me anymore but I still enjoy the stone-cold-killer feels I get after blasting my way through a room full of clever mercs. Bullet time is fun and the weapons are all pretty awesome. I always thought it was quite DOOM like in it's frantic pace and 'just one more level' gameplay.

Kids, HEADS UP!!! if you experience choppy frame rates (will prob start in scenario 2), youll need to dump this file into the working directory of FEAR.

DirectInput FPS Fix - DLL files - PCGamingWiki PCGW Community

    click on this

    Screenshot 2025-02-28 172525.png

and then unzip the file and add the file dinput8.dll to the FEAR root directoty.
thats it, buttery smooth after that..

Also another heads up.. if your experiencing unplayable movement with mouse look, it will be because your mouse DPI is much to high for the game. just moving the mouse a teeny little bit brings uncontrollable field of movement.. for example , i run my desktop at mouse dpi 3200, which if i leave it at that, makes the game unplayable.. i have to reduce the mouse dpi to 800 to get a good matching mouse look..

initially i thought it had to do with screen rez and refresh rates, (i seriously spent 2 days trying to fix this) but in the end its just simply mouse dpi..

I do love how when the guys are hiding around the corner and a leg is sticking out, you use the IMPALER to nail thier foor to the ground and then sneak up on em... lololol...
