    The Game Description

Thanks to Power for inspiring the whole retro drive club initiation back in 2019 with his retro lets play outrun. I figured this month we'd take a trip down retro sequel lane and hit up a version of Outrun from 2006.

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is a racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published in 2006 by Sega AM2. It is the 9th title in the series. Outrun 2006 is an updated version of OutRun 2. The game is split into two parts: a conversion of OutRun 2 SP (which itself includes the OutRun 2 levels) and "Coast 2 Coast", which includes single-player races and challenges, and local network and internet multiplayer.

OutRun 2006 was released in Europe and North America on the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in March–April 2006, but was delayed until June for PC. In Japan, OutRun 2006 has only seen a PlayStation 2 release, albeit retitled as OutRun 2 SP. Each version is subtly different so as to play to the strengths of its home system, which includes a link-up feature between the PS2 and PSP versions, a different mission set for the PSP and Xbox Live support on the Xbox.

The game featured an online mode for up to six players. The online service for the PC, PS2 and PSP versions of the game was discontinued in May 13, 2009. The Xbox Live servers went offline on April 15, 2010 due to the discontinuation of Xbox Live for Xbox.

    The How To

Take your pick on this one. The PC version will run on a peanut. There's an abandonware site that is one of my favourite to peruse which may or may not contain an iso that hopefully wont require your windows to be reloaded. There's also PS2, Xbox and PSP versions available if you are one of those console peasants :)

    The Track
Just going for ease of unlocked access here.

    The Car

    Jump in the Dino:

    The Entry Fee

A $5 Donation to a legitimate charity of your choice. This is not mandatory. If you cant afford it don't worry. I just figure we may as well have some “greater good” come out of this!

    The Rules
    • Post your best lap time in the thread for the nominated car & track. Please copy the existing leader board and insert your time to make for easy updates.
    • Its basically the honour system and just for good fun.
    • Don't forget a photo of your retro setup so that we can all drool over the unreleased arcade bootleg
    • An uploaded video will get you bonus points.
    • Stating your donations will secure you a spot on the leader board with a gold star and many likes.

    The Prize:

The glory of telling your family and friends that you beat some strangers on the internet in some random old racing game you played as a kid.

    This one takes me back.
Great choice as always. I'll certainly bust the PS2 out to play this again. (I wish I still had a local arcade with outrun 2 though)

I love this game and yes it is awesome on PC, but the real magic happens with system link on the original xbox! It's like having an arcade in your home.

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one of the best months!!

Also the best version is SP DX on Teknoparrot if anyone is interested

More than happy to have a write up to setup but it's pretty easy just pick your controller or wheel & drag and drop

Nice I'll have to check out the TeknoParrot action!

Just setting the scene with a 4:39.138 on PC

Time trail is not the most exciting mode to play. Might have to do one with traffic for a bit more challenge.
Feel free to come up with some different challenges to have a go at, maximum hearts in the weird girlfriend mode?

What's wrong with it? Please elaborate  You putting laps in?

also jimbogimp Outrun 2 Coast 2 Coast isn't known to be that difficult coming from the OG on default but girlfriend mode etc are more involving Are you playing the Coast 2 Coast and not SPDX?

Also here is the manual for those interested: https://manualzz.com/doc/31411375/outrun-2-sp-sdlx-manual

Definitely looks like this game is "unlockables". I put an hour into it on the weekend, and didn't mind it.

I think I'd played all of 10 minutes of it previously - I seem to have this on OG XBox (no idea how I got it, don't recall buying it, so it must have come in a bundle I bought somewhere). From memory the disc version I had struggle to read (I think my OGXBox laser is dying?), but I'm play an acquired US version now on my TSOP'ed console for this challenge.

Enjoying the overall racing feel and drifting mechanic. This definitely sits more on the "arcadey" side of things, which is definitely my preference to pure simulation. Penalties for crashing are harsh, so really it's about learning the tracks and keeping the concentration high. I find the ghost car drifts always everywhere, and often I'll overtake it by NOT drifting. But there are places where you just have to in order to avoid crashing in the bottle level car.

Hoping to unlock a few more tunes. The current batch of Outrun/Outrun2 classics are cute, but yeah, definitely don't gel well with the more modern game. Tempted to turn the music down and just play a few Ridge Racer tunes (or a playlist inspired by them) over the top instead.

The only music to listen to in Outrun is Magical Sound Shower.

I've been struggling with the drift mechanic too. Constantly coming out of a corner and just fish tailing down the straights.
Then I reduced the controller sensitivity.
    OMG so much better!

Definitely Enjoying this in full portable WIN600 goodness.

Yet to break out the steering wheel tie month, but from memory it's pretty fun with one.

drifts are often meant to be chained and once you get it it works well.

and yes works very well on a wheel, if you system link some xboxes it's just like having an arcade in your home, epic stuff. I beleive it supports up to 8.

Yeah I had a good time on multiplayer on pc with a few wheels at our work xmas party, unfortunately the Logitech DFGT is not really up to the task of noob drink driving simulator so I end up with two broken wheels that need fixing. :(

This was from the weekend, just mucking about a bit. Several crashes in there, so loads of time to make up.

Tried the weird "make your girlfriend happy" mode. Very odd. Difficult to make my brain OK with the idea of smashing into other cars.

I also need to remember to switch camera apps on my phone when I shoot 480i stuff, because this app wigs out on the colours, and my other better camera app doesn't.

Won't have any time for the next week to play this, but hoping for a few more runs later in the month. Quite enjoyed this, although as mentioned I am sick of the default tunes. I'll try to unlock some better ones (or at least inject a save that does it for me).

Also keen to test this on blindly high res on TeknoParrot.

I believe that is the law, yes.

I had a go this morning, either the image from the internet is busted or my PS2 MOD doesn't work properly, but I had no music. Which basically makes it unplayable.
Everything else was working beautifully, including my girlfriend telling me what to do to get the most hearts mode.

Even when I botched it and got less than AAA, I'm still scoring at the end, and if not she's not coming for the ride when I save up and buy that F50. I don't have to impress her with my driving! Either way I have a god damn Ferrari!

Times and pics of a proper set-up soon.

The PS2 version looks worse than I remember it, but I did play a lot of the arcade version and a bit of the Xbox version so It's no surprise the PS2 can't compete. (Outputting 480 via Y PB PR to a 68cm CRT that's a bit wonky these days) if I still had an Xbox, I'd play a side by side and likely never touch the PS2 version again.

There's a good spread of Systems going on. When are we going to see times from an arcade cab, remakes, emulation and PSP?

I'm using an NTSC image of the game from hard drive, and aside from music being missing, it works perfectly. I'm actually going to play a lot of the game rather than go for the best time possible. I reckon I could take another 4-5 seconds off if I stopped insisting on drifting around every single corner... It's a lot slower to drift all the time, but it just looks so much cooler.

As for the 2 displays, It's so I can play on the bigger screen, and check the capture is working properly (Y PB PR from PS2 is split to the TV and capture PC) I could happily play this game on CRT or a decent LCD as pictured any day of the week, I chose the TV for this session because my capture card does add a significant amount of lag... Think more like 1 second and not that 0.00000000000001 that people tend to bitch about, if I plugged the PS2 directly into the monitor, I could flip a coin on how I would like to play this game.

To be fair on the PS2 version of the game, the wonky TV isn't doing it justice (It's not just the geometry, it's all going soft around all the edges after about a million hours use) but I don't want to move one of my better TV's, and I don't want to take the PS2 and Computer to a colder room, so this is as good as it gets for now.
