WARNING: WHERE WE GO THERE ARE NO ROADS…

    The How To

Purchase the game on GOG. They have a package that runs on PC's from WinXP and up. Although there are potential issues on win11.
For those dedicated to OG hardware you can try searching on archive.org for an ISO. Or there are ways to re-pack GOG releases for win98 (I havent tried it)

    The Challenge

Trophy --> Knight Downs --> Sherman Trophy --> Jeep CJ7 (Soft Suspension, Soft Tyres, ABS OFF, Damage ON)

Never played this, but it always gets spoken about in a positive light every time I hear someone talk about it. Very keen to try this one out.

Oh my god this game is hilarious... "Five penalty points!"

I think this is best enjoyed with a beer in hand and the Canyonero theme playing.

Playing the GOG version with a keyboard so far, just managed to learn the course and make it to the end without driving into a ditch:

    screamer4x4-20220301.jpg
2:30 plus 10 penalty points, which I think counts as 2:40

going to connect my Logitech wheel I use for my PS5 & Gran Turismo 7 and attempt it again. What a great pick for the month! :)

What issues are you having running it? Send the log from schedular when you try and run the exe again, worked fine on my rig GoG version too

So I had problems too... the install stalled towards the end, but appeared to be complete, so I shut it down in tskmgr.

When I ran the default file Screamer4x4_gl.exe from the created desktop link, it tried to run... then stuffed the whole PC, to the point I lost opened data and needed to force a restart.

After all that I ran nglide_config.exe and set res etc., then used Screamer4x4_glide.exe instead which worked. Also, Screamer4x4_d3d.exe worked ok as well, although was limited to 4:3. Avoid Screamer4x4_gl.exe...

    Oh no!
Dang that sux. I'm on win 10 & works "ok" but there is a bit of weird screen focus/resolution wackiness when alt tab. Also the fast spinny map. Nothing game breaking though.

On Linux I needed to pick the Glide version manually as well, it's preconfigured with nglide so you don't need to run the setup utility specifically, but from what I can see the GOG launcher icon defaults to the broken OpenGL version.

thanks for the encouraging words ^^ guys.
a bit deflated last night after trying so many things...
i had a similar experience to JSmith above. failed install, and then would just crash constantly.

so, i have it working, kinda, now.
i've had to drop my desktop resolution to 1280x800 (down from an insane 2880x1800) and run the glide version with admin privileges.
now it loads and i can get into a game, but random crashs. the window just minimises and thens i am unable to get focus back.
i can get task manager up but cant kill the process or even do a controlled restart :(

anyway, i'll try a bit more and see how it goes

    cheers :thumbup::thumbup:

edit- my retro pc is still packed away, so i'm just on a very modern laptop for now

Yeah was nasty for me too... had a few notepads open with things I needed. Still, that will teach me to use notepad+ again.

I couldn't click on anything after it stuffed the PC, even in TM... I loaded Gamebar and was able to stop the game via that mini version of TM. I got some functionality back, but all prior opened windows were unusable... so had to force a re-start anyway. Was not happy Jan!

I got some quick play in early this morning... oh man, what a slow drive. If you lose momentum too, it can get stuck completely on a hill. :p

Actually d3d version loads only... crashes when you try and start the game.

Which is annoying, as gamebar or windows screenshots/captures don't work... no screenshots with glide version. :(

So the only working option for me is the glide version... cannot switch out of it once loaded unless I exit either.

Launch.exe allows you to pick which version you want to load, if needed.

I read some comments about the glide version and the wrapper being a bit fragile/cantankerous
But yes it's the only one that actually runs for me.
Still getting the minimise to desktop though. It might add well be a hard lock at that time as it needs a forced power down:(

Anyway, Jimbo it's a bastard for picking that soft suspension and tyres combo, that bites hard when it bounces wrong

hehe maybe I should have left that default, gotta get that bounce to glory!

I tried on win 11 and it crashed out immediately from the launcher. The glide version worked (for a few minutes of driving at least)
So yeah bummer on the win11 action.

Damn, won't run on my handheld either. Gets a "couldn't start rasterizer" error on all glide/d3d/opengl.

Stupid game! I was gonna be all dangling my feet in the kiddie pool laying down some sweet gate times.
Instead I'm dangling my feet in the kiddie pool troubleshooting graphics settings.

Yeah I get that on my laptop with Intel graphics, the Glide version works on Wine with AMD and NVidia. Possibly a similar situation with Win11 compatibility.

So much this, it's what makes the game hilarious but also rage-inducing when you're sucked in to a good run. My sum of best sectors would be SO LOW, but driving on 4 balloons and you lose traction on one of them from hitting an unseen bump, and best case you grind to a halt or worst case bounce off to the side. I tried experimenting with 2WD mode but the rears get even less traction then and it doesn't really help. The damage system is also harsh for an arcade racer, any engine damage immediately drops the power by heaps.

I set up a wheel over the weekend and had a few runs, my best clean time was 2:20, but I also got a 2:08 with 10 penalty points. Is there a rule about that?

    screenshot-20230305-18_30_57.jpg screenshot-20230305-21_24_55.jpg

The plan was to get it running on my Win98 box (Pentium 3 with Voodoo 3), but the HDD in that system died :( Would be interesting to see if the GL version works in Win98 with appropriate card/drivers.

so it's been a while and Agg's recent post was enough to trigger action

    upload_2023-3-8_19-16-33.png

should be enough to cover all of us for a month or two
