    The Game Description

Fatal Racing, known as Whiplash in North America, is a 3D stunt car racing video game developed and published by Gremlin Interactive in Europe in 1995 for MS-DOS, and published in 1996 by Interplay Productions in North America.

In Fatal Racing the player picks among a broad selection of cars and drives through tracks with loops, corkscrews, and jumps while trying to smash into other cars to destroy them and at the same time cross the finish line first. There is a variety of different camera views available in the game, "in-car", chase-cam, etc. Multiplayer is supported by IPX/SPX network and modem, in addition, a split screen option is also available. Fatal Racing supports graphics resolutions of 320×200 and 640×480, the latter being very demanding on the hardware available at the time of the game's release. The game also runs in a 16:10 aspect ratio and not the more common 4:3 aspect ratio at the time.

The names displayed for drivers of cars in the race not controlled by human players all come from famous robot or computer characters from science fiction movies and television (Kryten from Red Dwarf, Slave from Blake's 7, Robby from Forbidden Planet, etc.). These names, however, are changeable and can be renamed within the configuration menu in the game.

Those with keen ears will hear a lot of sound bytes used in other games. One of particular note is when your car is badly damaged and takes a while to start. That sound has been used in numerous games and movies over the years. Its right up there with that doom door sound that appears in every second sci-fi movie of the 90’s. :)

This game has a hilarious voiceover. Full on Arcade 90’s goodness, that is, until you finish one lap and have to hear it all again. Luckily you can turn the excitable fellow down in the options.

    The How To

In a pinch if you just want to give it a super quick go its almost playable in your browser at classic reload. I had to punch Ctrl + F12 a bunch of times to speed the game up, then turn pretty much everything to low in the graphics settings to get a playable frame rate. Or, it might just work for you?

Those with a bit more time and willingness to tweak can install DOSBox and the game runs a great deal smoother at high settings. Game files can be found by following your nose over at My Abandonware.
    Basic steps are as follows:
    Download and Install DOSBox
    • Create a folder to use as your C drive
Mount the folder in DOSBox or Automate it to mount at launch
    • Unzip the game to that folder (/Games/Fatal)
    • Launch DOSBox
    • Change to the mounted drive. (C: )
    • Change to the Fatal Directory (CD/Games/Fatal)
    • Fatal starts the game

I would love to see a video if someone can get this running using the 3D patch on a voodoo :)

    The Race

Its such a small game with short tracks we may as well go one by one through the whole thing. Each Sponsor has their car and track. Just select the same name.

Here's a ride around the Gateway:

    The Entry Fee

A $5 Donation to a legitimate charity of your choice. This is not mandatory. If you cant afford it don't worry. I just figure we may as well have some “greater good” come out of this!

    The Rules
    • Post your best lap time in the thread for the nominated car & track. Please copy the existing leader board and insert your time to make for easy updates.
    • Its basically the honour system and just for good fun.
    • Dont forget a photo of your retro setup so that we can all drool over the beige box
    • An uploaded video will get you bonus points.
    • Stating your donations will secure you a spot on the leader board with a gold star and many likes.

    The Prize

The glory of telling your family and friends that you beat some strangers on the internet in some random old racing game you played as a kid.

I think it was maybe need for speed shift? Or one of those era games that had Ken Block or some drift driver constantly yelling over the radio.

"Green light go go go!" At the start of every race. Tell ya what, if I was a pro racing driver and my team manager came over the radio with stupid shit like that I'd be changing teams post haste.

I think annoying voice overs are up there with FMV - technology that was cool at the time, and people thought they needed to cram it in everywhere as a selling point.

At least you can turn it down.

Sega knew how to do this right.

See Daytona and Sega Rally, hell even Crazy Taxi which was over the top still knew that less is more!

"Rolling Staaaaaart!" "This is the final lap!"

    "Game Over YEAAAAH!"

classics, unlike yeah a lot of western developers who thought that they needed to make the next X Games - hell, FH still messes this up to this day with the dumb annoying "characters".

    Its on!

Can anyone figure out how to clear the in game lap records? Would be super handy to just post the final screenshot, but there's some leftover times from when I was driving different cars. I had a look around and removed a file called leadbord.hmp but that did nothing.

    upload_2021-9-6_22-37-5.png

I had to dick around with the joystick calibration a fair bit. It wanders around everywhere and for half my session tonight I didnt have full lock on right turns.

Cmon guys, at this rate I'll walk away with the gold this month! :)

The first few tracks are a bit boring being able to hold em flat chat. If the comp heats up we could just focus on one of the last tracks as the main competition.

Man, early 3D was a wild time. Zero standards, zero consistency. Just look at how wildly the gamma differs even. Bananas, hahaha.

That whole channel is filled with fascinating stuff. Thanks for linking!

Gave this a bit of a run this evening, still getting used to this game... steering is touchy especially on keyboard I suppose. Engine sound is horrible, in this first car anyway.

My version comes from an Orchid CD that also contains Actua Soccer (it's up on archive.org). Made for Voodoo so no need for any patch hunting! Here's a dirty phone cap of the intro. Wish I could do some real capture, but the performance is not all that mind blowing on this P200 anyway.

I tried turning some settings down for performance. But there's not really a down. Just off. Wasn't worth it
