    Anyone here into "Retro Remakes"?
ie When fans remake an old game, on a current PC or other hardware?

If you haven't played some before, here's a chance to try a few good ones.
The guys at Retro Remakes have now uploaded all the 2008 compo entries for your downloading pleasure.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: May '09: Quite a few OCAUers seem to be visiting this thread for the first time.
Rather than expect you to scroll through 9 pages...

    (A) Here's the "top 10 entries" complete with download links.

    (B) Here's the story of Shane, an Aussie who competed in the 2008 challenge.

    (C) Here's a more indepth interview with Shane, with tips for would-be game remakers.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So.... anyone else got a particular old-school game, they wish someone would remake?

I'm a sucker for C64 classics, and most of my faves have been remade already. (eg Wizball, Bruce Lee, Delta)
Although... I would love a remake of Druid.

Ahh, you're in for a rather unexpected surprise then.
Gauntlet mashed up with another famous game. :)

Hmm, not in this year's entries.

I'm not sure if there's been a DD remake yet. The closest thing I've seen is Beats of Rage & it's many mods.

Thank you immensely for bringing this to my attention.

I haven't given the site a search yet, however here is a small wishlist off the top of my head.

    Space Quest / Police Quest
    Alex Kid
    The Lost Vikings
    Ultima Underworld
The original Lost in the Dark
Some old arcade fighter flight sims that I can't remember the name of
T2 game (from the arcade with 2x uzi's)

And as a tangent from another thread - remake NFS & NFS2 SE + Porsche unleashed with modern graphics, no need to change anything else.

No worries. It's a bit like finding "MAME" or "DOSBOX" for the first time. :)

I know there are nice fan remakes of the Kings Quests, but not sure about SQ/PQ

Hmm, I think I've seen a "lost Vikings" remake somewhere.
    Not sure about the rest.

I can't imagine anyone remaking the T2 arcade game?!?
It has an incredible amount of graphics - backgrounds, sprites... it would take years to do.

If you are interesting in "arcade gun game remakes" you might like the look of
my remake I started 2 years ago. Operation Block.

I haven't worked on it for a while, but I'll be working hard on it in 2009.

bruce lee feels EXACTLY like the original on c64. It has a few different modes: original (an exact copy), remake (same gameplay & mechanics with new visuals and sounds), and matrix which has trippy kind of visuals. There are a bunch more that need to me unlocked

Smila (one of the authors) is a real GRFX wiz, and a massive C64 fan,
    so I'm not surprised.

Other games he's helped remake include Wizball & Delta.

Can't wait to try it out. :)

Rofl, I haven't ever played a C64 game (too young, y'see ;)) but that Bruce Lee game is awesome! I keep killing myself by accident though because I fail at it. :upset:

NFS1 was far and away the best, all the newer games throw you in some city with Jap toys when all you want is a red Italian prancing horse and some open twisty, hilly country or coastal roads.

NFS3 came close at times, no so cigar. So did Porsche unleashed, but there was only one manufacturer to choose from there.

Also DeathTrack if anyone remembers that and the original x wing.

Hmm, I found one for you: Kareteka Remake. :)

    I don't think I've seen a Golden Axe remake,
but I did find a few remakes of GODS. Here's one of them.

I completely forgot about Tie Fighter, cruising around as Vader's wingman in a TF Advanced was brilliant. I attempted to replay it some years ago, but the vector style graphics were too much to ignore. It's good to see Rouge Squadron has a remake.

They will never remake gods properly. the secret puzzles are so complex a couple last for multiple stages. I used to know a few but the weirdest ones were flukes. hint: you can get invincible for the whole game in level 1.
