For me, the high Rez updates just makes it look like the game has aged terribly.. play it the original way carmack intended :)

I only partially agree with this.

    1.

Yes, I have been lowering the res for many of my retro 3d games for a few months now. Less texture seams visible (conflict: desert storm), less texture discolouration visible (gta: vice city), concave low polygon models look almost curved (halo). I am enjoying natural “anti-aliasing” for low res on my CRTs too.

Quake though was designed around lowpoly limitations of the time and the texture work is professional enough to scale well with resolutions, so its hires treatment is less affected if you enjoy this kind of thing. Can’t say the same about enemy models, they are still profoundly ugly. Aesthetically the whole game is just not my thing so I’m not sure if it looks better now, looked kinda okay to me then and looks meh now, but in high res.

    2.

BUT. New Quake has crossplay multiplayer on all systems and that’s where it shines. I’m still more of a Q2 multiplayer guy (spent hundreds of hours playing q2dm1 against both my buddies and bots in 98-99). Q1 modernised multiplayer looks like good fun akin to the Q2 arena deathmatch experience of the 90s.

    SNK 40th Anniversary Collection

    70% off. Was $42.95, currently $12.89

24 games, save states, rewind feature, and a built in museum mode including various art work, notes and history. DRM-free on GOG.

    https://www.gog.com/game/snk_40th_anniversary_collection_copy3

[edit] I bought this, pretty sure I'll never play it. But feels good to pay for some titles I've been emulating for years.
