Thats really good value for a reproduction card especially the 2 channel version (Resound), wish more of these things were fairer priced, that could make a really good combo with a pci sound card for digital sound, MPU-401 playback and have the resound for genuine OPL3

Is it's loving all you think about?

Is it more than you dare to think about? ;)

Well some great news as I browse the MDFourier discord today - there's someone on there who's interested in starting testing on various OPL cards, and they're chatting to OCAU's prodigal son and one of my favourite YouTubers philscomputerlab about working together on it.

Fantastic news! I don't know how I can help at all, but if there's anything I can do, I'm willing to lend a hand.

Actually sounds like there's some real challenges ahead, as getting levels and timings right is going to be super tricky on the infinite variety that is PC hardware.

Well that's good news that it's at least on their radar now.

MDFourier hasn't quite gotten the mainstream understanding that something like the 240p test suite has. I'm hoping it will in time though, especially outside of console enthusiasts.

this makes me positively giddy, it's kinda magical to hear the guy who is to me basically the voice of Sega and to see him perform Daytona Let's Go Away, so happy to see Burning Rangers too.

RMC takes a look at one, coupled with a Dreamblaster X2 wavetable daughterboard. Looks mighty tasty.

I was reading up on this because I wanted to play the game, and found out it's famous for being one of the few soundtracks originally written for the Adlib Gold (OPL3 with some other sound processing chips). I thought the OPL2 soundtrack was pretty neat, but the Adlib Gold version blows it away:

So far apparently only "PCem" emulates the Adlib Gold, but I'll be giving that a go. On my real hardware it's a tough choice - OPL2 is more faithful to the original soundtrack but clearly worse than OPL3, MT-32 sounds better than OPL2 but isn't as faithful. I think I'll go with MT-32 since I've been listening to the CD soundtrack.

Yeah, the Gold version is superb. MT-32 is my best option too, and it's one of my favourite OSTs on that hardware.

Vanne did your MT-90S show up? There's one locally on ebay at the moment with no bidders. Sure would make a fun little 'practice amp' for MIDI instruments, in addition to a standalone sound solution for a PC.

Is there a list anywhere documenting "Game to sound hardware"?

Like, I know you can play stuff on anything you like. But I'm always interested in the gear the composers themselves used, so I can get an idea of how it was developed originally.

And given that I don't want to play some of these games 5 times through on 5 different hardware setups, if I'm going to play it once ever, I wouldn't mind knowing this sort of stuff. I can always listen to it outside of the game at a later date.

A nice, zero-fluff comparison of OPL3 and ESFM, from excellent channel pc-sound-legacy.

The OPL sounds a little brighter here, and the ESFM a little fuller IMO. I'd actually tweak those highs up a little if I could. I need to try the ESFM option more often in the games that offer it.
