    I'm surprised there's not a thread for this yet. The European Space Agency launched a mission back in 2004 to intercept a comet and land a probe on it, and that landing is going to happen in a few hours. There's live updates here and live video here. Exciting stuff!

    I reckon it's nothing short of science fiction, and a truly imaginative and exciting endeavour. My wife and I had our names recorded on a CD that was bolted onto the side of the Deep Impact impactor many years ago (NASA had a site where you could register your name). Silly, pointless, perhaps, but it was nice in a way.

    I really grok this stuff.

    separation has occurred ... lander is approaching the comet.... 28 min lag between for responses to the spacecraft.....we will know if the lander survived soon

    They lost contact with the lander but that was expected... have to wait 2 hours before link is established again... Live feed continuing - they seem to think its successful but waiting on data back from Rosetta to confirm the lander (Philae) made it

    1h:44m to landing. I think I'm going to go to bed...

    Got to say the ESA live feed lacks the production values of NASA. Can't even get an audio track and just looking a mostly empty mission control room.

    Anyone devoted enough to stay up til 3am?

    Philae is ready, detached, landing gear down and getting closer to the spinning, flaring comet.

    All these scientists are congratulating themselves and there's still an hour and 25 minutes to go.

    Technically, an hour, but at half a billion km, theres 27 minutes delay.

    Got to love European fashion...
