Running a 3440 x 1440.

Hello fellow members... been a awhile since iv posted.

Need some help fron those who are still in the game.

Bought my son a new monitor running a res of 3440 x 1440.
My current gtx680 wont run that res..... what are my best options with out killing the piggy bank.

I just sold my 1080ti... regret it as I got a 1070ti now and it's ok definately passable.

Helps if you got g sync. I would go for a 1080 or a 1080ti if you can stretch it.

But I guess even a 1070 will be a massive upgrade from your 680

 

I was thinking of running 1070 in sli?

 

1060/RX580 tbh. If you can afford more, just hold out for next month and get a discounted 1080Ti.

 

I'm looking at second hand atm. Won't be going new.
1080ti won't drop that much straight away !!!!!

...or you meant it doesn't run games at that res?

Yeah, maybe some simple games, and still good for browsing or watching movies.
This looks like a 4K screen, probably need at least GTX1070Ti/1080... ideally GTX1080Ti...
There should be some reviews on YT of SLI, not sure if it's worth it.

 

It'd help in knowing what your son will be doing with the screen.

i.e. Youtube, Netflix

or Gaming, in which case which ones?

 

Do you want higher details in newer games? Just go for a 1080TI. I've gone 980, 1070, 1080, 1080ti.... lol

 

Yep it mostly depends on the games your son is playing (or looking forward to playing)

The 680 Will probably smash put mine craft. But battle field 5 on ultra... not so much.

Aim for a 1070 or 1070ti and see how you go, might just have to turn some settings down. I would avoid SLI if you can (coming from someone with an SLI setup)

You would be better off with a single 1080 or 1080ti then 1070’s in SLI

But again this is all depending on what games he wants to play

 

Depends on refresh rate and if it has G-Sync (because fps drops less annoying with G-Sync)

If its 60hz a 1070 will do job very nicely, if its 100hz id go a 1080ti. If it has G-Sync you might get away with 1080.

Avoid SLI and the very low percentage of games that support it well (if at all).

It's a 100hz monitor that supports G Sync.

He wants to play most common 1st player shooter. Counter strike, Doom etc.

Since its getting set up I might start playing some battlefield too.

 

If possible a 1080 as a minimum for a little future proofing. But even a 1080ti will struggle on some games at that Res.

 

Yep 1070 as an absolute minimum, 1080 to make sure you’re always hitting that 100fps at high settings, you might battle with ultra in some games

 

mat eeven my 1080 2ghz oc wont run 3k res
your better off just getting a 1080ti cheap they about $500usd now

 

Ok looks like a 1080ti it is or should I just wait for the new Nvidia cards to come out. Not sure I wanna spend that kind of cash tho.

Also what's the best way to run it... HDMI???

HDMI wont run that res/refresh, have to be displayport.

is 1080ti's on FS section here quite often now, seen as low as $700.. non ray-tracing performance of 20 series will determine how hard 1080ti drop but I have a feeling the 2080 wont be much quicker so 1080ti might still be in high demand.

 

I'd push for a 1080ti for that res/100hz/gsync. I run a 3440x1440 100hz gsync, 1080ti still struggles at higher detail settings. If it were me, I'd wait until the 20 series hits local retail stores, should be able to get a 1080ti a bit cheaper than current prices.

 

the beauty of 3440x1440 is you can also run 2560x1440 with 1:1 pixel mapping and not lose any clarity, just makes it 16:9 with black bars instead of 21:9 and a nice FPS boost.
