Thanks for your advice getting my 1700 ===> 3700x upgrade happening. It went very smoothly, even on my old x370 board.

Absolutely love this 3700x cpu. My gaming performance (@ 1440p) has just improved so much. My 1080ti is actually having to work now.

the latest statement from Intel must have them extra happy too.
intel ceo bob has said he's happy to let amd have a massive chunk of the cpu market so that they can move into the 'silicon market'
eg, they're going to chase the gpu, fpga etc markets.
they'd be happy with 30% of that market and dont want to be the 90% market owner of CPU

Yes, but also they've been looking at this other stuff for a fair time now.
fpga and gpu are big growth areas for the guys with deep deep pockets.
im sure intel dont want to get caught out behind on these.
equally im sure theyd rather have kept their 90% share of the cpu market too.
    GG amd

Yep, basically 100% yields since can salvage defective dies for 4, 6 core and 12 core cpus

Not only that they are getting top dollar for every die they package.

Package 2 dies, worst case they end up with a 3900x.
Package 1 die, you end up with a Ryzen 3600.

I wonder if that means there could be a 3600 or 3700 with one completely disabled die?
AMD model works really well for processes where you yield isn't perfect, it means they can sell profitable CPU's even with bleeding edge processes.

Each die cost them what? $13 usd to make? And they can use pretty much every single one of them.

I presume Intel could get TSMC to make CPU's on that 3nm tech, if they had a design and wanted them too?

Not sure TSMC has the capacity. Would be easier for Intel to buy/licence the 3nm tech and use their own fabs.

This is actually the key problem, a shortage in capacity. Both AMD and Intel are experiencing shortages. AMD on select high end products, Intel across the boards. TMSC capacity is split across apple, AMD, Nvidia etc. New high end fabs are expensive, and new processes are expensive. People generally thought desktops etc were dying and phone tech would replace everything. That hasn't happened, people still need desktops and laptops.

But instead of the PC market shrinking for ever, it has basically leveled out for the last 3 years, tablet growth has slowed as well. Schools and workplaces aren't giving up desktops entirely. We are still basically at 2007 volume levels.

Different market.. You start getting into celerons, and thinclients. AMD is just about to launch in that market with a new product too. But the main point is desktop isn't dead. It finally stopped growing at 300 million a year. So there is probably a billion PC's on work desks out there. It wasn't that PC were dying, it was just that market finally saturated.

Wow 90%+ of Nexus readers are AMD.

And Intel *STILL* hasn't resolved their shortfall in production.
