    Hello ladies and gents

Speccing out the new rig. And stumbled across a strange one.

I’ve been reading and checking YouTube videos and noticed that for some reason, even though the ryzen cpus don’t support quad channel. That it runs quicker in 4 dimms vs 2 dimms ??

    E.g.

Notice in GTA5 and Witcher that the frames are higher on the 4 dimms configuration. But in some other games the 2x8 is better ...

    Thoughts ?

I'm not too knowledgeable in this area, however I read some motherboards have daisy chain or t-topology and this affects whether 2x or 4x is a better option. IIRC, the former is best for 2 modules whilst the latter is better for 4 (but has lower max clock speeds).

Do we know anything about how well the 3000 series plays with dual rank memory? That kit is dual rank however I believe all 16gb modules are currently dual rank? Then again 3200mhz is the base speed for the 3000 series so guessing it would only be a potential issue if you were going for 3600mhz+?

I’ve been looking into this also. I have found most motherboard manufacturers have a list of ram and configurations they work in.

    Thanks for the responses guys.

For ram speed I’m aiming for 3600mhz to go 1:1 to the infinity fabric. Still doing a bit more research on 2 or 4 modules.

I do agree with you the_pessimist of the upgrade path and what not. But I’m normally the type that doesn’t touch their system until the next big upgrade lol.

Sleeping on this.... maybe there’ll be more info on this surfacing once everyone’s got more time on the platform

FWIW I'm running 4x8GB at 3600Mhz, 17-18-18-38 (I haven't looked at overclocking my memory at all yet) with a 3900X, no issues at all so far (on an X570 Board, Crosshair VIII Hero)

    Are 3950X even released yet?

I'm going with 4x8gb as I'm getting an X570 Taichi which I believe is T-Toplogy. Either way I'm not planning to OC so there's not much difference between 2x16gb and 4x16gb.

    Would you mind doing a quick test? knowing that games don't generally use more than 16gb....Run 2 x 8 and 4 x 8? :p

What board are you looking at?

For example, my Formular X570 says the following, Plus the QVL list should give you a pretty well accurate way to go.

    3rd Gen AMD Ryzen™ Processors
    4 x DIMM, Max. 128GB, DDR4 4800(O.C.)/4600(O.C)/4400(O.C)/4266(O.C.)/4133(O.C.)/4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3733(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3200/3000/2933/2800/2666/2400/2133 MHz Memory

    2nd Gen AMD Ryzen™ Processors
    4 x DIMM, Max. 128GB, DDR4 3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3200(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933/2800/2666/2400/2133 MHz Memory

2nd and 1st Gen AMD Ryzen™ with Radeon™ Vega Graphics Processors
    4 x DIMM, Max. 128GB, DDR4 3200(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933/2800/2666/2400/2133 MHz Memory
    Dual Channel Memory Architecture

From there you can choose the correct modules required, example of the formula again.
