I have come across a lot of very conservative people in IT though; people who control the data centre choices for large organisations and they point blank refuse to even consider AMD.

Its not just multithreaded workloads, is the type of operations done in multithreaded workloads, a lot of instructions were made 30-100% faster. There are also improvements in running multithreaded code, but most of it comes from the instructional improvements. One of the reasons why certain encoding is like 50% faster.

A 5950x with a slight overclock (ie what reviews have already achieved) will beat the 24 core 3960x in pretty much every benchmark.
Optium tech got just shy of ~12000 with a 5950 with a 280mm rad. A 24 core 3960x gets about 13000 in cinebench R20. That is probably the only benchmark the 5950x would lose against the 3960x. And its losing by <10% and its first day overclocking results on a AIO. A 5950 would be a better workstation than a 3960x even for someone who renders frames on a box for half of their day.
The 5950x leaves the most performance on the table for an overclocker. If you had a custom cooling loop, jesus, you might be able to get 4.7 or 4.8 all core. I have a Ncase M1, so in theory I could fit 2 x 240 rads. Plus this dau8er new bios automatic boosting while OC is interesting, if it came on my motherboard I would totally get a 5950x.

The Epyc CPU's will just be obliterating for intel. Not only that they will be dumping existing AMD cpus pretty quick as well. The big solution providers will start pushing AMD out on mass now. Companies could halve their server space or half their power bill.

For sure. which is why a small win in performance metrics isn't enough , but as the gap widens, and time goes on, only those environments that either don't benefit from the best performance /watt , performance / m2 , and / or are isolated from competition that can afford to stay rusted on to Intel. (and probably will)

I doubt it - it has a completely different VRM for a start.

    Would be nice though

I'm hoping that with Startrack express I'll get my 5600X on Monday. I think I'll need a USB bios flashback prior to boot though. Anyone confirm if they can boot without a bios update?

    Running a i7 5960x.

Might finally upgrade to a 5600x. Dont need as many cores as I built a server lab

Awesome mate. I'm still debating whether to grab a 5800X or 5900X.

    What CPU you coming from?

5960X been a great CPU, i still have one lying around. X99 was a great platform. But enough reason to upgrade it now!

would have been nice to catch up at Respawn, but damn covid! GL with the upgrade :)

The 5800X really makes no sense, no comparable difference to a 5600X for gaming, uses twice as much power and has no included cooler.

Once you price up with a cooler the price difference widens between the 5600X and narrows to the 5900X..................

The value gets worse whichever you look at it.

IIRC B550 needs an update to boot and there was another released later for 5000 series optimizations.

3700x. So minor upgrade .... but IPC is the main reason I’m upgrading so I can get the most out of my 3080/6800XT whichever I can get my hands on first.

I agree with everything you said and Steve said. But Steve leaves out the longevity at a price point argument. I am very happy that my 5800x will certainly last me a few extra years for games than a 5600x. And I just don’t want to fork out extra for a 5900x. Steve’s points are right about it being in no mans land buts it’s a very simplistic view at the same time.

for me it’s a similar argument to getting a 3080 over a 3070 for gaming. The 3070 is perfectly capable now at 1440p but the 3080 just gives a bit more longevity.

I would wait and see if this feature is expanded to all boards. I think this is likely, Asus probably just has the drop on everyone.

5900x vs 5950x Is the $390 worth it...? <20% on multithread for 45% more cost.

If I got the 5950x I would go water cooling for sure probably a custom loop. Really the 5950 demands it.

Ahh, same as me. Let me know how it goes once you've got it installed. I've got the exact same plan 3080/ti or 6800XT/6900XT.

I like the idea the 5800x has a single CCX but it's priced so close to the 5900X.
