Well, as luck would have it Aussie youtuber JarrodsTech just happened to do an in depth review on my exact dilemma re: single rank / dual rank for a Ryzen gaming laptop:

Looks like the sticks being x8 is probably as important (if not more so) than being dual rank. Had no idea there were so many different configurations!

In CPU limited games, I'm losing over 10% of gaming performance with my current setup (2x8GB x16 SR) compared to the optimal 2x8GB x8 DR setup. Probably worth a $50 upgrade considering the laptop is worth close to $2000. It's almost like getting a performance car and then running cheap tires...

any 5800x owners happy to share their PBO settings?

I just picked one up and already am finding it quite different to my old 5600x

Negative all core 30 and 20 failed to boot windows so I'm currently on all core negative 15

Cb23 score is around 15,500 and 3DMark CPU profile Max threads 7,868 so keen to hear how these compare to others here.

Temps are toasty under load 89-90c, expected? recall reading these chips run hot

Yeah mine runs stupid hot with pbo even under a 360x3 custom loop. I actually ended up setting a static oc of 4.7ghz @1.24v as I don't need bleeding edge ST clocks when gaming at 4k.

My chip started crashing and throwing errors at +100 max boost, and also didn't like -10 curve. I would call it a lemon but I'm actually pretty happy with the static oc.

ok sounds normal then. Shame, really like the idea of it boosting to 5ghz+

Suspect in gaming work loads it won’t quite hit the 90c mark I’m seeing in CB23.

5800 is a weird bin. I feel AMD missed an opportunity to smash 8c16t performance out of the park ...

The reality of running a business :(

Are most people monitoring the 'effective clock' when tweaking settings, or just going from the reported clock speed (HWInfo tool)?
I've actually ended up turning PBO off altogether as it was just getting too hot (90+) for very little gains in performance, although I was seeing 5GHz reported. Even with it off, it's hitting 4.85 GHz, (4.8 effective) with max temps under water of 80 C.

coming from a 5600x I was hitting 4.85ghz boost with temps sub 80, now the 5800x boosting to 5+ghz is nice to see but yes temps at 90c are too much for my liking, anyone here running pbo and seeing more reasonable temps?

Yes I was. I was never able to replicate these high temps. I think I saw a max of 87deg with PBO but this was on a Fractal 360 AiO.

I've found that by maxing my fans the temps don't exceed 86-87 so a bit more reasonable, might see how they are in-game since I don't run any workloads that mimic CB

I absolutely could not deal with my fans running at 100% rpm, 1400rpm is about my limit lol.

One thing I can say is despite the temps it barely does anything to raise the coolant temp in my loop which is what you would expect for the ~110w it pumps out. I assume it just can't get the heat out of the ccd into the spreader and cooler effectively. My max temps were around the 87-90c mark with max synthetic loads too. ~60-65c with 1.25v 4.7ghz

given it's summer I've decided to try undervolting this puppy until winter comes along, got it sitting at 4.4Ghz at 1.125v, curious how this compares to others here?

how have you tested stability ? Important part of the equation if you want to compare to others

good question, I guess not properly, dialled it in with CTR and have left it since. So far so good but might not be 100%

I am still running my 5800x at 4.7ghz 1.25v, has been stable for a few weeks now. Keeps load temps around 65c. Cpu-z ST dropped from ~670 to 650 but MT increased. No measurable difference when gaming at 4k, I could probably drop it further.
