I didn't think you could really get much more out of these CPU's with manual OC anyway unless you went to utterly stupid power and temps...

Then again I haven't bothered manually OCing for 5+ years now because I don't see the point, especially with the auto boost on CPU's and GPU's basically doing all the work as long as it's cool enough.

Although if PBO is still available and it's just manual OC I'm not sure I'd really care...

wonder if the 5700x is a double ccd part (making more use of reject chips) rather than the big single of the 5800x

This is fu<king fantastic news for X370 owners, about time really since we always knew it was technically possible.
People sitting on a 1700X just received a new lease of life for their mobo, an upgrade to say a 5700X or 5800 is welcomed.

Question now is who will be first to release a bios..

Interesting. I wonder if it will still be the “gaming king” against an overclocked 12900K.

That is what I was expecting to overclock issue to be. Makes sense, and tbh although this is the overclockers forum. Who bothers doing that with a Ryzen CPU? We push the limits and get almost nothing extra out of them.

With the recent bios news from AMD, I think a shit tonne of X370 owners won't give a shit even if a 12900K beats the 5800X3D.

Plenty of people who largely lean on multithreaded performance or just don't like the constant PBO volt/temp ramping run a fixed OC on Zen CPUs. It's not ideal from an "overall performance" standpoint but it can have benefits for some use cases when you can increase MT performance at a slight cost to SP, while reducing load voltages and temps. Limiting voltage to 1.35v is pretty much a non issue for daily users as you run into a wall before then, but removing frequency control does suck.

ECO mode might still be available for underclocking if needed.

And how much do you really get out of Alder Lake? The 12900K is basically clocked balls to the wall out of the box. Maybe you can squeeze ~5% more from it? It's super shit that the 5800X3D can't overclock, but it's better than it not being released at all.

I'm more upset about there not being a 5900X3D tbh, it could have actually made a bit more sense as well - if voltage doesn't scale, then more cores which would have had a lower all core clock anyway............

Being only 8 cores doesn't really make it the end of platform life hero. But I suppose any more cores would have cut too deep into AM5 sales.
