Edit: 24th Sept/2020 - this thread used to be called Ryzen 5000 series, but AMD has leaped from Ryzen 3000 to Ryzen 5000 in the move from Zen2 to Zen3 to align their desktop and mobile branding. Edit: current unofficial roadmap; 2020 - Vermeer, Ryzen 5000, Zen3, AM4, N7, DDR4, PCIe4 2021 - Warhol, Ryzen 6000, Zen3+, AM4, N7p, DDR4, PCIe4 2022 - Raphael, Ryzen 7000, Zen4, AM5, N5(p?), DDR5, PCIe5 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Thought we should kick this off even though its a while away, but there is some juicy stuff being posted... https://www.notebookcheck.net/Repor...clusive-TSMC-5-nm-enhanced-node.461721.0.html 'Enhanced 5 nm' node - 5nm+?
Geez we're only just getting ready for 4000 series. Nice to see AMD not letting up though. I like some tough competition.
Hynix came out with this earlier in the month; We still don't know if the Ryzen 5000 series will be using DDR5, but if it ain't, then there really isn't a need for a new socket. In which case Ryzen 5000 could be available for AM4. One interesting thing on the pic above is the 'on die ECC' for DDR5. Snagged from https://www.notebookcheck.net/SK-Hy...00-MHz-expected-frequency-range.459816.0.html
I think we will see 5000 on a new socket.. There have been significant shrinks, power changes, frequency changes, and I believe DDR5 is likely. However given Ryzen 4000 looks quite powerful, they may not rush AM5. Maybe at 4000Mbps.
...articles saying second half of 2020 for datacentres ddr5. either either. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Ryzen...et-AM5-to-debut-with-Ryzen-5000.446653.0.html
Both Intel's (Sapphire+Granite Rapids/LGA4677) and AMD's (Genoa/SP5) server offerings are rumoured to offer ddr5 + pcie5 in 2021. I can't find anything for 2020?
i read an article mentioning ddr5 for data centres late 2020. could have just been fud. made me wonder if ddr5 would be introduced at the high end first before mainstreaming to pc. if pcie 5 is coming soonish...it seems like a rapid development when pcie 4 hasnt been out all that long. https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/pci-express-6-coming-2021/ pcie 6.0 lol. rapid alright i guess its a 5, 5 thing. 4000 series am4 socket. and 5000 series am5 socket. for pc. === https://bit-tech.net/news/tech/memory/micron-begins-sampling-next-gen-ddr5-ram/1/ plenty of articles (January 2020 dated) mentioning rdimms ddr5 for datacentres. https://www.pcgamer.com/au/samsung-ddr5-release/ and they need a time period to sell their ddr4 tech prior to that ddr5 wave including 4000 series ryzen...but there will be some overlap. not much imo. all the nerds will want ddr5. i know i do!
I suspect the server chips might take up PCIe5 for the compute cards. Pointless on the desktop for now.
2022 for ddr5 on the pc according to the roadmap being discussed here. AM4 has a long future methinks. as does pcie 4.0
So how does your ocd like am4, Ryzen 4 pcie4 and ddr4? I still think it will be on a new socket. 4 years on one socket is decent they will probably need to add or change the number of pins with all these new standards. I mean you would be laughing if you bought a decent x370 in 2016 and be able to throw in a zen 2 when bios is up to date.
I found this interesting; https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2020/05/07/the-exciting-future-of-amd-socket-am4 Sound like they leaving the option open for Zen 4 to come out for AM4. Which kinda makes sense if you tie the introduction of AM5 to consumer DDR5 releases. So far we have just seen roadmaps of DDR5 for Intel and AMD server platforms in 2021. Could be 2022 before DDR5 becomes pervasive and cost effective ready for consumer needs. I don't think AMD will skip a year with no processor introduced, especially since they have access to extremely good silicon from TSMC atm, and there'll be plenty of 5nm silicon available in 2021. So calling it now - Zen 5/Ryzen 5000 will be coming out for AM4 in 2021 - but only for 570, 550 and 670 boards...
But does B550 etc boards support DDR5? My hunch is they'll go 5nm Ryzen 5000 series along with DDR5 and possibly a new socket
remember the boards that did ddr2 and ddr3 ? obv different now with onboard memory controllers... but who knows what they can pull out
No. My point is that there is no point in going to a new socket if there isn't any cheap DDR5 available. So if AMD has alot of 5nm silicon available for a new cpu, but no DDR5 to go with it, then 2021 will see Zen 4 being released for AM4. About 10 years ago, AMD made cpu's with support for both DDR2 and DDR3. Not sure they will try that again.
I'm not 100% sure with AMD, but I know Intel has both the DDR3 and DDR4 imc - and as is the case with the Surface Pro w/i7-7660U I have from work which uses LPDDR3 @ 1867Mhz. I imagine the next generation of CPU's would be in a similar situation, with IMC's for both to support DDR5 and something like LPDDR4.
Carrizo (2016 ) was the last AMD chip to have DDR3+DDR4 support Current mobile all do DDR4 and LPDDR4x
