Any recommendations, my almost 3 year old launched our old salt grinder off the bench the other day and broke the top off. Figured it was time to buy something that holds a little more and has a little bit more adjustment. Would like a matching pair just because. Not really interested in salt boxes. There seems to be a mismatch in that you can't get a good grinder that looks decent, and all the good looking ones are pretty average, or cost a million dollars. Kenji recommends the Unicorn Magnum or whatever it's called, but it looks a little cheap. Anyone got any recommendations?
Sounds like you're shopping high end. I've got a basic grinder from ikea, glass body, ceramic grinding mechanism for $7. I've got it adjusted very fine for the salt grinder, and fairly coarse for the pepper. To answer your question, would I recommend it: yes. I'm really happy with mine.
Not really high end. The ones I've been eyeing off are around 70 for the pair. That's probably pushing it to be honest.
Following this thread, I’ve been thinking about getting a pepper grinder and have no idea what’s good or what things cost.
I bought this set a couple years ago. They work great. Pepper is a steel grinder while the salt is a ceramic. https://www.kitchenwarehouse.com.au/Maxwell-Williams-Maison-Salt-Pepper-Mill-Set-20cm
I must say Peugeot ones are the nicest ones I've ever used, especially the ones with the seperate grind-fineness adjuster around the base, rather than constantly having to retighten the fastening knob up the top to adjust coarseness as you do on oldschool ones. EDIT - Looks like they call that feature u-select
i gave up and just use the glass/plastic ones you get at Woolies and just replace them when they wear out. Most of the expensive ones grind too fine for me, i like the S&P a little bit chunky, and don't get me started on the electric ones.
if the grind is fine i say why not just use the normal pre-ground stuff - it makes no sense. I actually had these lasted 5 or 6 years, was constantly tightening the tops and one of them ended up breaking. I prefer the "disposable" ones, lol. The grind was too fine for me, i like chunky S&P.
These are the ones we use at home, pretty decent at doing what they do, still working well after a few years.
Because pepper is a spice and precracked stuff isn’t as fresh due to being exposed to the air for ages.
good point, i still like a chunky grind over the fine grind - the M&W ones were too fine imo and i'm normally a fan of M&W stuff, it's cheap enough and decent quality. I was a bit surprised when mine broke. I'm as suprised as anyone that i prefer just the cheap shit you get from the supermarket. the whole opening on the bottom is a pita too, you are constantly cleaning them and where you store them, supermarket is on top and has a cap.
Build yourself a rig similar to: https://lifehacker.com/attach-a-cordless-drill-to-your-pepper-grinder-for-supe-5918291 U want to get 1cfpm of pepper &| salt out of that sucka perhaps a duel wielding setup for those big stir fries. Go 20v for sure to make sure you can handle a big mag of corns.
