    Hey All,

I'm having problems with my SATA drive on my Asus A8V Deluxe motherboard. Considering that its a via chipset, im not suprised. I've tried updating the bios versions and tried several different version of the VIA Hyperion Drivers with no luck. The drive is detected by windows sometimes, by it doesnt let me initialise the disk in disk management so i can't format it. The drive isn't faulty, i've tried it in another computer and it works fine. It's definately not power because i've checked the PSU with a multimeter. Not sure what to do, any suggestions?

my computer specs are as follows:

    AMD 64 3000+ (Venice)
    Asus A8V Deluxe (VIA K8T800Pro/VIA VT8237 chipset)
    2 x 512MB GEIL PC3200 DDR-RAM
    LG 16x Dual Layer Burner
    Sony 32x DVD-ROM
    120GB WD IDE
    160GB WD IDE
    128MB MSI 6600GT AGP
    Windows XP Pro with SP2

    Cheers

I had a LOT of trouble with the same board and Western Digital SATA 2 HDD's

The Tech in the shop knew what it was straight away - incompatability between WD and Via.

He swapped the HDD for a Seagate (non SATA 2) and it worked straight away.

I think theres something on the actual Via site about it.

My sata drive is a Maxtor 250GB. The model is 6L250S0.

Thanks for that, i'll have a look on the website now.

It's not an incompatibility related to any particular brand of drive. The problem is that the VIA 8237R chipset and a few other VIA and SIS chips do not support SATA2 drives at all.

Seagate drives just won't work, since there is no way to jumper them into SATA1 (AKA SATA150) mode, whereas Western Digital drives can be jumpered into SATA1 mode. I'm not sure of other brands.

    More 1337 info here.

PS. I haven't checked but I'm assuming your (new) drive is SATA2 and not just SATA. :)
