Casing material isn't going to make much difference to protecting hdd but I do expect enough ventilation vents/holes (not expecting a fan at these prices) to help dissipate heat generated by these hdd.

Went to local officeworks yesterday, was told nobody in Victoria have 2tb in stock. I went to another officeworks today and they have 5 in stock on the shelf. Price back up to pre-sale level. Despite having a receipt dated yesterday from the same store, they wouldn't sell me one at sale price. Arggghhh!

You are totally missing the point, the material the case is made of greatly helps dissipate heat especially if it conducts it well, most 3.5" external cases do not need fans cause the case dissipates the heat effectively, what good does having holes do if there is no airflow, plus plastic is a terrible heat conductor it keeps the heat in.
What i mainly was commenting on was the pcb, the quality of the components cannot be great for that kind of price.

So how do you crack these Seagates open? Wanna give it a shot without breaking it but not a big deal if I do.

Haven't opened my 2nd drive yet either (ie shrinkwrapped) not sure I need it so might just return it to OW's

Just in case anyone is interested, i bought one from harvey norman in watergardens (melbourne), they have at least 10 on the shelf, DOM is 8/2011

Nearby officeworks, dse and big w were completely sold out so i ended up getting it for $128

Finally found one the other day. Had tried 3 Big Ws in Perth and found mine at Whitfords, sitting on the shelf all alone.

I'm actually using it as an external drive and it's not bad so far. Need another power pack though as it's a hassle unplugging it in the lounge. Off to WTB section! :)

I bought 5 from Big W Toowoomba last week for $88 each. They are getting more in on the 7th of December. Just bought 2 from Aust Post Shop - one for $99 and the other for $129. $99 one had a price label on it so they had to give it to me for that price. When I bought the two I was told that there was a limit of two as Segate had put out a message stating that there was a shortage of drives.

It's so ridiculous when they do not price match the exact same product sold in the exact same place that is ticketed for a cheaper price.

OK so the one in the photo is OK? Where is the manufactured date on it?

I'm looking at trying to get a couple after work today.

didn't you say yours was the same but had a 7200 drive:confused:

by OK I mean I can rip it out and put in in a microserver, 5400 vs 7200 won't make much difference but I would prefer the faster drive.

same part number but mine had the extra info of "DOM: 08/11" on the sticker.
Yours doesn't, which makes a difference because I believe someone found the packages without the DOM have 5400 drives.

Just bought a 1TB at Harvey's without DOM on the box, and it's only a 5900rpm dealio. Their website states 7200rpm. Back it goes!
