I am not really into networking, nevermind enterprise networking. I was given this Astaro 110/120 Security Gateway. Model ASG110/120

Does this do something my home modem or router already does? Is this a hardware level firewall? The production date is 2007 so its not THAT old, can I benefit from it in my home?

Pre-heartbleed [1], and since acquired by Sophos, discontinued as a standalone product, and no updates available. I wouldn't use it.

Although Sophos haven't released an updated software image for these, on the inside it's just an x86 board*. People managed to load up to date PFsense builds on them, if you're looking for a project to waste some time on.

*a Nexcom board with a shitty Via C7 CPU from 2005.

Realistically, the hardware is so old that it has no practical use, although it has some potential as an intellectual exercise.

Sophos person here. Yes, those boxes are long EOL.

However, you can download the 'software' free home use UTM or XG platform and install on this. However, I'd suggest you replace the RAm with at least a 2GB DIMM. i think those things only had 1GB of RAM in them.

Alternative is they will work OK with pfSense.

Happy to help with software and licenses if you want to push the newer stuff onto it.
