Hey guys i went to JB HI-FI yesterday and i saw a new model of the Sony Muteki on display.. which is this one here

    http://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-muteki-7-2-home-theatre-system.html

I searched online and cannot find any reviews on it let alone on youtube..

Wondering if anyone has bought this or has any information on it? I want it for bluray movies and gaming on ps3/xbox 360.. I am sure the music side of it will pump.. but i want something with the upmost surround sound and crisp mids.

    Anyone?

I've got the 2009/2010 version and its good IMO.
Others on here will flame - but hey, in my pissy small AV room they work well.

Im sure people will be a fanboy of something and think its the best thing ever just cause they own it.. But im too old for shit like that when i just want honest answers from people lol..

I am thinking they might be good but then again this particular model is meant to be a flagship model (apparently)

But will need info from people first before i take the plunge..

It will be going in a relativley large room..

I was seriously contemplating getting my own AVR then buy speakers of my choice after which will cost me in excess of 2000k+

See if you can shop around to get one around $1000. For around $1000, there isn't really much options. This is probably one of the better option. There will be plenty of people who will come and tell you that they can build a better sounding 2.0 system for $1000, however that's kinda pointless since it's comparing apple and orange. For the money, you're not going to get much better. But you can also pay a bit more and get something else better. How much more is really up to your budget.

No beating around the bush, The Muteki has alot of speakers for $1000.

If your aim is to fill a small room with speakers for the least amount of money, It wins hands down. And it will be loud.

But the age old rule applies, you get what you pay for.
At $1000 for the package, you are paying $91 per speaker driver, and they will throw the amp in for free.
You do need to question the quality when it's this cheap, and will you be happy with it in a year when you hear your mates $1500 5.1 system that sounds considerably better... but isn't quite as loud.

I can't comment directly on the new model, I have only heard the 2010 edition (in a loungeroom not a store showroom). But as I said, if you want loud and a shit ton of speakers, there is no better bang for your buck.
If you want quality, look elsewhere.

I know what you are saying and i've seen similar stated on many forums over the past few hours from other users asking something similar.

I would say my budget will be $1800 at most possibly could stretch to an even 2k. I was kind of looking at the Pioneer VSX-2021... and get some good quality speakers. But of course i want something loud and with great surround sound for blurays and gaming.. But yes of course we want it all loud also for music! There is so many speakers to choose from its really hard to know what to get.. Especially when you are not clued up on this stuff

I am also looking at this system. For $1000 it seems value, and I want 5.1.

Open to more opinions. Audiophiles will slam it, and tell us to buy all this what nots from the US and put it together and whatevers, and it will prob look like ass. But sound 3% better.

    But Ill wait for opinions.

I'd buy a $300 Pioneer AVR from JB. Or similar.

Then I would buy some speakers, I'm not sure what. Possibly secondhand.

This way does give you an upgrade path as you can change speakers. The Muteki is an all in one system with limited upgrade options.

A friend has an older version of these. From my experience with them they certainly do loud but the audio isn't anything special. Much like cheap surround sound computer speakers, the individual drivers are very poor and they cover up their lack of mid range by over doing muddy bass from the subs. All together they work ok. That isn't to say you can't get reasonable results from them as for the $1000 mark it will be very hard to do better and at 'normal' audio levels they are quite clear even if the audio is a bit flat sounding to me.

Personally I would be saving up a bit extra towards the set up and going with something significantly better. Even low end Dali's or something. Speakers are a long lasting item, do you want to look back in a few years and want to replace them or look back in 10 years and still be happy with them. It also depends on how much you plan to use them, if they will always be going with music when not watching movies then it is definitely worth getting something better, if it is in the spare room and used maybe once or twice a week then it probably isn't worth it.

the Muteki's are the logitech Z5500 equivalents

sure they can get loud, but you're compromising on quality

if they sound good to YOU, who cares what anyone else thinks???

i personally wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole, but doesn't mean YOU shouldn't

ATM looking at this AVR - Pioneer VSX2021

What speakers are a good brand for a 5.1 surround sound?

Looking at the Bowers & Wilkins CM8 speakers atm any good? cant find a price for them in aus though

if you can afford 1000 for a crap system like this then keep saving another 500 or 1000 and do it right first time. Sony love to prey on the market of people who don't know any better.

Atleast if you start with an amp and some decent floor standers you can build on it later and upgrade bits and pieces instead of throwing it on the scrap heap a few years later

To be honest you can go nuts looking at all your options lol, so many out there.

I personally hunt ebay for speaker packages / 2nd hand speakers and i have had some absolute bargains. B&W are good depending on model however you can do very well on cost and quality by doing a little research on some models that are currently selling :)

THanks for the links and ideas mate you really gave me something to work with now!! So cheers!!

So what are your thoughts on the pioneer VSX-2021? Is it a powerful receiver and will it produce good surround sound? I mean i would like to spend at maximum 1k on a receiver and then buy a speaker package couple weeks later separably

I dont know much about them personally as im a Marantz person myself however it does have quite a few features for its price, i have heard they are a little light on quality however though which is to be expected for the price point.

It all comes down to personal preference really however i think you can get a better deal if you picked up a previous gen amp as you would get a class leading model for around the same price, it may be missing the app support though i would say as its a newer thing.

Also when it comes to speakers check out individuals aswell as packages, you can get some good deals picking up floor standers etc separately and building a package based on strong performing components.
