I don't know many faces of OCAU members, but I did notice Leo Simpson.

Looks interesting :). Very true about the throw away society, dieing are the days of fixing items that break down.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to spot that :)

    It's a MakerBot CNC Cupcake. http://makerbot.com/

I didn't see any spectacled, brunette females in that video... Did I watch the wrong one?

Hehe, noticed that too! Didn't expect his voice to sound so whiney! I guess reading his strong opinions in the opening pages of Silicon Chip every month built a different perception in my mind.

Indeed the industry is dying. I recently finished my electronics trade and after a 30+ year tradition of employing 3 new apprentices every year, my employee decided to scrap the idea of apprentices in the electronics field entirely! I was in the second to last group to complete the apprenticeship through the company.

As for the doco, fantastic! I want more, and also want to go to some of the swap meets seen in the short. Any idea where/when they are?

    Which ones Goth?

Yes, it really is that bleak. The industry is in an extremely sad state. :(

This looks pretty interesting, I look forward to seeing the whole thing when it's released!

Will it be on TV, or online or what?

Also... it's cool that an ocau member is reputable enough within Australia's electronics industry to get a cameo on the screen!

    Which what?

Do you mean the "swap meet" or whatever it is depicted at 1:20 in the video?
I don't know what/where that is, but it does look interesting :)

At first I thought it might be Rockby's, but I don't think it is, at second glance.

I can identify some of the people/places/gadgets shown in some scenes in the video, if anyone has any questions, but not all of them.

Goobers and Goth, do you have any experience with the MakerBot?
I've been following a photo guide on makezine.com for some months now, tracking the building of one from bottom up.

Jeez I agree with everything in that video, and I must say, it really is dying out in Australia, Im 19, 2nd year electronics and computer engineering student and all I can say is I learnt NOTHING on electronics back in highschool, in physics we did one week on 2-3 resistor current and voltage divider networks, which on the whole.... taught nothing about electronics... We really should be pushing for learning at younger ages, I mean, you can buy a beginners electronics kit for $<5 from Jaycar nowadays, would it be too far fetched to have a class make something like this as one of their projects?

It would be a real eye opener if students could be introduced to electronics and given the opportunity at a younger age... Schools have Software programming courses (Mine was information programming technology) why cant we have a hardware equivalent (A micro-controller project would be awesome, combine a bit of software with a bit of hardware)?

The reality is not every kid is going to take to electronics, but why should the minority of those that would, be denied the privilege before they even know they like it?

    End Rant - fantastic doco

Wow, looking fwd to the full doco..

It's true, the Niche markets is all we have (and everyone knows it) .

I'm fortunate enough to already be in the industry, and working for such a company. One that exports products all over the world, all designed, manufactured, and serviced (incl component level SMT repair) here in AU.. for now.

Only catch is we've now been gobbled up by Americans  so theres also a risk if we can't keep cost to manufacture low enough, things will go off-shore, even though the reality is if the Company hadn't "sold out", the huge profit margins of these Niche products would be high enough to keep things here.

Wasn't expecting much, but then the down to earth-ness of this trailer was amazing - seeing the cchs crew in their blew my mind as well, that's awesome for them :)

    Can't wait to see it.
