    Hi all

I went to the Breaka Burleigh Surf pro last Friday and Saturday. The weather and waves were variable, but, although I’m no surfing expert, I really enjoyed the surfing on show, and seeing a few well known 'names' in action.

Cropping seems a slightly controversial area with surfing pics. Some people seem to say “Show where the surfer has come from and where they’re going”, while others just say “Show where they’re going”. If you take option 1 fairly literally, you sometimes end up with the surfer near mid-picture (and therefore ‘rule-of-thirds’ issues). If you take option 2 seriously, and crop heavily behind the surfer, you usually crop away nice patterns in the water/wave.

Anyway, here we go (clicking on an image takes you to the Smugmug Gallery, which will also show main EXIF data):
(some better weather further down in the Saturday pics):

yeh, these are great! according to smugmug you're shooting with a 400mm, is that right? that would be a very nice lens to have :)

    Thanks AmB, Deftone, and Diane.

You've helped me by emphasising the popularity of the aerials.

Yeah, but only the F 5.6 lens, not the bigger/pro ones. Having only the 5.6 lens also means you're only using the focussing point as a single-plane sensor, not a 'cross-type' sensor on most Canon bodies, including mine. Presumably this means either less speedy, or less consistent, or less accurate focussing (?). Some reports suggest that the 7D will use cross-type AF sensors at F 5.6, but that confuses me. I don't think even the 1D MkIV can do that (AF sensors acting as cross-type sensors at 5.6), so it puzzles me that it can be achieved on a cheaper camera, but not on the sport flagship???

Awesome. Love seeing surfing shots on here.

Re the 'cropping' i think it depends on the type of manuevre being performed. Like, for a cutback i'd like to see the line he has carved in the wave in order to get to the position he's in. Or for a barrel you would prob wanna capture down the line of the wave to see where he is headed.

    1. Don't worry Dopefish. I had exactly the same scenario (thinking a similar word which wasn't there) recently when looking at the Nikon board over at Fred Miranda:

    2. Thanks eskimo, xhanatos, Trev, Mr Chilled, amsm, Squeezer, baar01 and Dopefish for looking and commenting. I really enjoyed those 2 days (except for parents letting their kids sit on rocks right in front of photographers... .)
