I had the most amazing find this afternoon. On the way home after two Mac dropoffs, I ran out of papers so I decided to pop into the tobacconist near my old digs at the Winston Hills Mall as it was close by. In the seven months since my last visit they'd completed a major extension, so I grabbed my Zig Zags and went exploring.

Oh look, an Aldi! Wellwhaddayaknow, its a store-opening sale! I wonder what tacky gizmos they've got this week.

There, smack dab in the middle of the store, was a small mountain of these:

Hitachi's 1 TB "LifeStudio Disk Plus", a USB external with a clip-on 4 GB USB stick. How much?

    $49.99

And there was no sign up stipulating one or two per customer, so I manhandled four to the checkout chap and he rang them up. Proof pudding:

Inside is a bog-standard Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 7200rpm SATA 3.0 chamber and an interface. The 4GB turned out to be another suprise -- it's not actually a normal USB stick. No, instead it is a MicroSD card reader that looks like a stick but with a 4GB card stuck up its arse!

    WIN!

If anyone can get out to Sydney's Hills district before the sale ends on Friday (9 Dec) you too can grab an armful.

damn wish Aldi had some closer to me. I desperately need a 1tb internal hard drive for a new build.

Do they still have any left?

Nope. It was a store-opening sale, not a chain special. I was at my local Aldi this morning for regular shopping and they were nowhere to be seen.

$99 reduced to $79 at my local, but only the display model to be seen; none on the floor. I didn't ask about stock - was shopping next door and thought I'd have a 60 second look.

Ah-ha! That explains the mountain -- they just decided to put them out early as an extra-special special!

I might as well crack open the spare, doubt anyone'll want the extra cost of post :p

Fair enough, I thought the website had the same info as the catalogues.
