I had the most amazing find this afternoon. On the way home after two Mac dropoffs, I ran out of papers so I decided to pop into the tobacconist near my old digs at the Winston Hills Mall as it was close by. In the seven months since my last visit they'd completed a major extension, so I grabbed my Zig Zags and went exploring. Oh look, an Aldi! Wellwhaddayaknow, its a store-opening sale! I wonder what tacky gizmos they've got this week. There, smack dab in the middle of the store, was a small mountain of these: Hitachi's 1 TB "LifeStudio Disk Plus", a USB external with a clip-on 4 GB USB stick. How much? $49.99 And there was no sign up stipulating one or two per customer, so I manhandled four to the checkout chap and he rang them up. Proof pudding: Inside is a bog-standard Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 7200rpm SATA 3.0 chamber and an interface. The 4GB turned out to be another suprise -- it's not actually a normal USB stick. No, instead it is a MicroSD card reader that looks like a stick but with a 4GB card stuck up its arse! WIN! If anyone can get out to Sydney's Hills district before the sale ends on Friday (9 Dec) you too can grab an armful.
