    Hey guys!

I haven't been to Sydney in a long time, and haven't had to worry about accommodation/parking/costs involved for any of the trips I've been there.

I'm going to Hamilton at the Pyrmont Lyric Theatre start of January.

Where would be the best suburb to stay in? (catching the train is fine).

I don't want to have to drive my car all the way into the city.

Where would people suggest? Previous times, I've stayed out at Olympic Park and traveled in from there...

    Is that still advisable?

It's going to be mid week.

    Cheers!

What price range or budget for the accommodation?

Plenty of hotels in Pyrmont and Darling harbour right near the theatre from $209 (Ibis) to $982.

Why would you stay outside the city if you're staying for a show? Are you airbnbing?

Any other requirements such as a good dining or drinking scene?

Well it's outside the CBD but in Sydney Council area, looking over from Darling Harbour to the City... there is a little budget hotel in Pyrmont for $109 if your trying to keep costs down.

Nah not fussed. I'm trying to avoid any additional fees (parking/tolls etc).

I'm going into darling harbour for the show, so any eating/drinking will more than likely occur there.

Just get a hotel that allocates you a parking slot if you're driving down. If your flying down, just get a hotel inside the city and just travel via tram, walking, bus. If you want a list of hotels i like let me know.

Otherwise if you Airbnb, then the following suburbs would be good Marrickville, Newtown, Chatswood, Manly (ferry in) otherwise anything around a 5km radius will get you in to the city via public transport in 10-15 minutes

List would be good if you have one.

Looking at 150ish. I'm literally only going to be sleeping there the one night. In and out.

Currently looking at the mercury in Parramatta for 135 a night, but still not sure on the area.

Personally I'd rather spend a little extra for cbd/pyrmont/newtown accomodation, (or even be cheap at a backpackers hostel), and save my time and money from public transport

The only benefit to staying further away from the cbd would be if you wished to check out the blue mountains while you're there

Parramatta would be a 25-40 minute train trip to Central, and then a 10 minute tram trip to the Lyric. A bit of a pain for the reasons you're coming.
Anything along the L1 light rail line (from Central to Dulwich Hill via Star Casino) would be very easy.
Like others have said, CBD is walking distance (over Pyrmont bridge), or Pyrmont would obviously be the best being just a short walk.

Why don't you check google maps? It'll show you how long it takes to get to the cbd from all these places, whether by foot/car or public transport, and it'll answer your toll road question too ;)

To answer the tolls one, the answer is yes/no, like most cities, you can take a toll road to maybe save 1-10 minutes, but there's other roads too

Depends which way you go. You can get anywhere in Sydney without paying tolls, but the time taken may take a lot longer than expected.
From Parramatta - if you were to drive to the city - the fastest option would be M4 (Tolled) / Westconnex Tunnel (Tolled with M4) / Anzac Bridge / Western Distributor - and hopping off at either Pyrmont exit.
Getting home would be the reverse.

Assuming that you use the James Ruse Drive entry/exit at the Parramatta end, tolls would be $7.54 each way.

Alternatively you could take Victoria Road, which is how I used to get to/from work every day - essentially the same route - this took me around 45 minutes on a motorbike, in peak, using bus lanes. With no tolls. Car would be > 1hr on that route at that time.

Off-peak would be less - around 30-45 minutes in a car.

Because it's not always updated, hence wanting peoples info on it that have used it regularly/been there recently.

But yes, I'm finding the best option would be to stay in town.

I was toying with YEHS but was super cheap, which instinctively you (I) avoid. https://sydneyhotelcbd.com.au/

$160 for 2 nights which seems too good to be true :D

can have a look around the greensquare area. there's a train station there and central is the next stop.

ive never been to this place, have only gone past it a few times. iirc they have parking there.
