System Uptime Records

Today we had a server reach 1000 days of uptime!

We even had a cake with candles to celebrate

This is a RedHat box running on HP hardware with a fairly specific role. It hardly ever gets logged into and is never patched.

Unfortunately this server was decommissioned a few weeks ago. Yes, I kept it running in the data centre just so it got to 1000 days uptime, haha.

We also have a Cisco router running in production with over 1000 days uptime;

The best I've had on a Windows 2003 box is 515 days and 413 days on a Server 2008 box.

this machine is on the internet in a colo. pretty amazing that it still doesn't appear to have been compromized...

We've been using ksplice on some of our RH systems for a while now. So we get kernel security patches + more uptime!

However we still do reboots early morning every now and then to make sure they come back from a hard power failure.

1000 days isn't bad for a x86 machine.

I once migrated offices, and we moved the UPS and a single server together so we could keep the uptime day count intact.

 

I agree, 1000 days is easy. I had a Win2k box that sat in the DataCentre for 5years untouched, never got to see the uptime on that for various reasons the new box is now at 221 days

someone please correct me here, but dont the nineMSN servers get a reset every 2 weeks on order of the nine network ? I think hostworks does it, id have to ask a friend who used to work there.. But thats fairly retarded.

Incidently, it was the ONLY MS based machines in the building.. Heh, go figure.

 

Damn, you beat me by 5 days. Ours is a Win2003 Enterprise Edition server. Uptime is 768 days

 

got a lot of servers at work that get weekly reboots, some even get nightly reboots

My 'server' at home (Dell P2 notebook running Windows Server 2000 SP4) that runs just some webserver stuff and file sharing

 

My XP based file server lasted 3-4 months per reboot back in ~2008-2009, then I went to Ubuntu and its lasted about the same about of time. I dont have any screenshots though. I mainly reboot to add/change hardware.

My webserver on the other hand:

Took a week to set it up right, hasn't been rebooted since.

 

Went through our ESX hosts... This one had the longest uptime I could find.. 199.2 days! Won't be like that for long as she's going to be upgraded to vSphere in the next few months...

I didn't get a screen shot, but our EMC CX3 San had a storage processor with a tad over 2 years. It's was rebooted last weekend during a flare upgrade.

 

Best I ever had at home was about 309 days I think... Scored a second hand DIGITAL server on eBay with 3 SCSI drives and a Pentium Pro 200. That was where I learnt Linux!

Best I've had for work is my CentOS VPS with Web24 which has been running for about 400 days at the moment if I remember right (haven't logged in for a week or so).

 

Uptime is just a symbolism of an unpatched kernel, or a machine that does not have cyclical failure testing.

A good policy is one which test for failures, redundancy, repeatable power up cycle by failing a random machine at schedule period, and see how the system reacts. A better policy is one which has planned obsolescence which ties with technology upgrade and financial write-off for tax purposes.
