Made these over the weekend with a "Dutch pancake maker" that i bought from Woolies...For those who dont know what it looks like -

Now there was something funny about this "Dutch" pancake maker...it was made in Asia somewhere and has an octopus cartoon on the grill top...I think it is a takoyaki grill, rebadged.

    Ingredients :

Batter (should be on the thin side) -

    • 1 2/3 cup flour
    • 2 1/2 cup dashi soup - I use instant bonito stock powder from the asian markets.
    • 2 eggs
    • pinch salt.
Now u heat the pan, pour in the batter and add:

chopped spring onion, chopped pieces of boiled octopus tentacles, pickled ginger, and some dried red shrimp if u want.

Grill the takoyaki balls, flipping with a pick to make balls. Ie as the bottom forms, flip so the uncooked batter runs and makes the circle whole.

When browned, remove takoyaki from the pan and place on a plate. Put sauce and mayonnaise on top and sprinkle bonito flakes.

    Enjoy.

I'll try making it. Beats paying $8 for 8 balls in restaurants and they arent even freshly made.

My electric one was $16, reduced to clear at woolies lol.

The expensive part is the octopus. I bought about 1.1 kg of large legs, and ended up using just under a third of it with that batter mix above. If you can get it cheap, all the better.

I love Japanese food but for some reason the flavour and texture combination of Takoyaki always makes me feel quesy.

Takoyaki is one of my favourite foods. My absolute favourite "would-eat-every-day-until-i-die" food is okonomiyaki, which I'd like to learn to make at home, but I have this fear it won't work out properly.

Ill do an okinomiyaki thread on the weekend...

okinomiyaki uses the same toppings and batter mix, except use half milk and half stock. Make up a 1/2 batch of batter, chop up a few ingredients, starting with cabbage, spring onion, any meats or sea food u want.

Drop the fillings in the batter, so it should coat everything then pour into pan, and make into pancake shapes..remove when browned, keep warm in oven while make the rest.

    Add sauce. :)

in a rush this morning, so 'scuse the spelling :)

As you know you can put what you like in it, or have it how you want (see translation)which is the beauty of the dish...I cheat and dont use grated yam, and i like mine all mixed together..other might like it separate, or with fried noodles (which i dont like  )
