Finally managed to pick up my preorder from Teds this morning, so what better way than give it a field test.

Unfortunately, I forgot to change settings when going from static to moving shots so mostly all of the flying shots are a mess..

That said, it's quite clear that the lens I was using, a Sigma 120-300 sports & 2x TC, is no match for this beast.. The difference is MASSIVE, and with a little practice should achieve a really good keeper rate..

Plus having a 150-600 is really useful. No more 2x TC swaps and at 150, it's reasonably wide enough..

Looks like it does the job nicely - what's it like to handle?

Surprisingly sharp. Then again, putting a 2x teleconverter on any lens tends to degrade it quite a bit.

Love the shots. I love tele lenses... That looks like a very nice one, for not that much cash, either...

I'm amazed at how sharp it is. Although it's clear you need to give it a lot of light so it can perform well.

Wish this lens was available in Pentax mount.

Looks like I might have to start investing in Nikon bodies.

Nice mate, what body were you using?

    How's the size?

I was looking at getting the 120-300 sigma but this being about a third of the price is very tempting.

    Cheers.

Thanks everyone.. This lens is super sharp and i haven't even touched any of the micro adjustment controls..

It's really light weight and nice to hold.. weighs 1830gms for lens & hood and 270gms for the tripod collar. The hood is quite long so rotating a polariser would be difficult. 95mm thread size as well. The zoom is reversed so you have to rotate from right to left to extend to 600mm..

Using a 5d mk3.. I already own a sigma 120-300 sports, so for me, the size/weight thing is huge.. I'll only ever really use my lenses for airshows, so reach is number 1, and once you put on a 2x TC on the sigma, image quality suffers dramatically. Obviously the sigma with no TC is a much better lens, but for 1/3 of the price for twice the reach, it's a clear winner. That said, I still have yet to see how it really handles auto focus, as I had all the wrong settings when the plane did its flyby.. it also didn't help that it literally went from left to right and right to left, and then came in for a landing, so before I knew it, it was all over. Will have to go back on the weekend and test again..

I've read that people taking bird in flight shots, it's proving very problematic, but, planes are much bigger and don't dart around and run a defined course.

Also, all the above shots were with VC off.. I accidently turned it off and only realised when I was walking back to the car..

I can honestly see why these things have a massive backlog.. The image quality is sensational, and isn't too far off my old canon 400/5.6.. just a shame i wasted $4k on the sigma lol

Are any of those shots cropped? I'd be very happy with most of those photos. It appears pretty darn sharp. It's looking more and more likely that I'm going to purchase one of these lenses.

    Cheers :)

I'd love to see a 100% of something with some detail, unprocessed. I've got tons of customers keen on these and would love to see a proper sample from someone who knows what they're doing (that's you Vladdo!)

Pentax Q7 + Q to K adapter + DA* 60-250mm gives you full frame equivalent of 282mm-1175mm for about $2k.... But certainly wouldn't match these results.

I love that shot of the F111 engine exhausts. So much detail!
