Searched for this is news and current events and the mobile forum and couldn't find any mention......

Good news in the naming of what it possibly could be, bad news that it's out there on the black market !

Unless the thief got it in a cradle promptly, HTC spokesman stated that the device was remote wiped, leaving the users with nothing.

Remote wiping just removes all data from embedded flash and any installed cards (if the cards were encrypted) and removes all applications - it doesn't kill off the OS.

If anything, the thief is better off because now the phone isn't locked, it isn't password or PIN protected - remote wipe resets to factory defaults and starts up the WinMo equivalent of oobe\msoobe.exe in Vista, or oobe.exe in Windows 2008 Server.

Edit: And whacking it in a cradle would not have helped too much except to delay the wipe rather than prevent it. Remote wipes are held in a pending state until the device responds and confirms the wipe. Cradling a WinMo phone generally causes it to lock (assuming there is a pin or password assigned) unless there is an existing replication partnership, and the host PC will then not sync until the phone is unlocked.
