    G'day all,

It gives me great pleasure to present you all with parts one and two of my long-awaited review of the Pioneer DVR-216 DVD writer. These files will be temporarily hosted on MEDIAFIRE because the leader of SPEEDLABS, INC. is currently overseas.

    So here you go folks...

    Part 1: http://www.mediafire.com/?jnjnajjkdyt

    Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?ylfgrrzk7dp

As usual, all comments are welcome. The rest of the review will be uploaded shortly and this thread will be updated when this occurs.

    Regards,

Has anyone heard a whisper of maybe a pioneer slot loading dvd burner ever coming out? i've been after a slot loader for so long and for some reason they continue to make em with horrible trays :(

I'll be keeping and eye on this thread, i've always got time for a new pioneer optical drive :D

hey thanks terminal, i recently got 1 of these drives to replace one of those crappy Asus burners everyone told me were so great, and when i got it i had burnt 30 discs before realising the very same burner would not read those 30 discs but would read on all the other drives i have in my house..

didnt realise mine must have been an earlier model with 1.02 firmware, so i flashed to the 1.06 and all was fine.

im still not sure of burn quality with these units, in the past i have never been a fan of the pioneers, but because i could not locate a new sony sata burner i decided to get another dvr-216 for my sons pc when i got his 4870 gpu a few weeks ago.

all i can say is these units run smoothly and are reasonable quiet compared to asus and liteons i had until recently (gave them to a friend)

i have since read some reviews with rather poor results so it will be interesting to read yours i must say, as i remember you saying in whirlpool some time ago you didnt rat these as highly as one or 2 of the other brand burners.

got all 3 parts now, will read them later tonight.

    cheer.

btw, you got any opinion on the sony burners ???

Quite frankly I'm quite impressed at all the technology that goes into the DVR-216. The only problem is that Pioneer push to release their drives as early as humanly possible and that leads to severe problems related to immature firmware. The DVR-215 (R12.5) was rather poor to begin with (when I reviewed it) but is now an outstanding drive with the latest firmware (revision 1.22).

so we just hold out and hope we see some decent firmware coming soon to improve this drive from what it is now.

at least its nice to have a drive that doesnt hang my pc like the Asus burner did, nor make noises like the Asus.

    cheers

i still have one of my my 2 benq dw-1650 burners but i would still rather my dw-1625 and 1640 models.

Good review, but frankly, I find it hard to get too excited about hardware that costs less than a decent dinner.

It's almost pretty amazing that they do cost less than a decent dinner :)

The prices of drives are just crazy these days. I'm just waiting on the blu ray drives to come down a bit.

hey peeps im reposting in this thread because i cant get the 1.09 firmware installed in one of my dvr216 burners (currently had 1.06)

tried them in XP and Windows 7 and keep getting errors at various points during the upgrade process.

all im doing is double clicking on the firmware file i downloaded and let it extract into the default C:\DVR216\FW109EU folder but it gets to 21% or 56% or 75% then bombs out.

anyone know whats going on ???

this is the firmware for XP and vista.

    cheers

BTW i have never personally liked any pioneer burners, always loved my benq burners until they became unavailable as benqs, but i was given 2 of these pioneers after i had 2 bad Asus sata burners crap out on me.

i use a 20x samsung in my q6600 pc now, and i love it, but the dvr216 in my spare 8400 gaming pc refuses to burn any type of media which is why i thought a firmware update was in order, but as yet cant get it updated.

my next burners will be sony (nec) sata if i can get some.

EDIT: the burner is now burning again, but the firmware still wont update to 1.09, anyone know why, its still on 1.06.
