There's a new toy sitting on my coffee table, next to the pile-o'-books and the CRO.

It's a Melles-Griot 643-LICA-A01 250 mW krypton-argon ion laser, with its associated Melles-Griot 171B ion laser power supply. (It's badged as an Omnichrome Series 43, probably formerly used for confocal microscopy, cell sorting. making things fluoresce, or some biology shit like that.

    http://www.lamdapacific.com/mlx_manage/upload/200721316394734.pdf

(Power supply isn't specifically mentioned here... but the 175/6 looks quite similar.

Haven't got it to start yet...both the "interlock open" lights are coming on... but I can't tell how the interlocks are interfaced or where they're supposed to be connected.

    More updates to come later.

I'm sure you know this but... be so careful with your eyes around this thing. Even partial reflections can do instant damage with that much power (I know this first hand. Luckily nothing too major though).

Yup.... and the power supply can kill you three different ways (the power cable to the laser head resembles a snake with trailer plugs on either end).

And if you were to break the laser tube and inhale the beryllium oxide in a powdered form, it'll give you lung cancer.

Unfortunately, since Kr-Ar lasers are emitting visible red, yellow and blue lines at the same time... it's extremely hard to have glasses that completely offer protection. They'd need to be completely opaque.

Waterproof it and strap it to a Shark's head?
Seriously though, I'd love to know what you would use that laser for

    Aaaaannnd in the news tonight;

"Two Qantas pilots were permanently blinded earlier today by an intense ground-based laser that penetrated their cockpit windows and melted their eyeballs. The plane was lost with all 300 souls on board."

That's a sexy laser. It truly is.

Surely the place that sells these lasers has suitable goggles for it, they don't need to be opaque as they only need to block or filter enough of the 3 wavelengths to be eye safe.

Maybe buy some filter material for each wavelength and layer them?
Work out which order to use them as each one will have some effect on the other 2 wavelengths.

It's a class IIIb laser... so no different to a proper laser pointer, really.

Oh, did I mention I got it for free? It was being discarded, so I rescued it.

Not 100% sure it works, but it was a chance I was willing to take since it's all intact and all I had to do was carry it away.

Says right there in that pdf you linked to ;)

    Remote P2 Port

Beam Interlock - Pin 1 & 3 Jumper to complete the interlock circuit

Safety Interlock - Pin 19 & 21 - Jumper to complete the interlock circuit

EDIT: well i see you mention the one you have isn't in that pdf, but they all seem to have the same pinouts for the P2 Remote Port. I'd bet its (un)safe to assume the one you have is the same :3

Find plenty of sharks in the ocean, doing nothing in particular.

    Its self serve though. Literally.
